I am Music

Odd how the "Ike and Tina Turner Revue" is, in retrospect, Tina, Tina, uh, Tina, the Ikettes, and some surly guy in the background who's part of the backup band. Why feminism, people.

Why, yes, I had a schoolboy crush on Tina Turner. Oddly, it has extended to my (cough) maturity. I fell in love here. It was spring. The flowers were blooming along the Seine and I was happy, for perhaps the first time in my still young life.

Chalk it up to my age. Crankiness, perhaps. But I think this is the future for Ms. Knowles--doing competent cover versions of her betters. Not bad, but ce n'est pas le vrai Tina.

Tom Brokaw seemed to rock out to it, though.

Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins.

The Pumpkins are starting a 9 day residency here tomorrow night...sold out in 5 minutes...
I took in some of the alternative entertainment tonight. The headliners were the Mad Tea Party...the videos don't do them justice, but their supporting act was the Wiyos and I think this gives you a fair idea.

Fun stuff T. Now I know what I have to look forward to. :)

They reminded me of Spike Jones and His City Slickers. Here's another Spike clip featuring a very young Mel Blanc.

And the Spike Jones clips made me think of the marvelous Louis Jordon. Many people argue that Jordan is the true father of rock and roll. You can't see why so clearly on that clip of Five Guys Named Mo (though there is a rock-infused jazz instrumental in it), but check out this clip of Caldonia and it's pretty easy to figure out who Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis, et. al. ripped off.

Oh well, it's late. I'm Reet, Petite, and Gone. ;)

Your Louis reminded me of another

:) ...note how excited Keely Smith looks...here's one where she contributes a bit more....

Louis Prima, eh?

There's only one song he does I really love--the Tathagata song. :D

:rose:

I thought it would be this one...although it's not the Prima version ( I'm talking about the beginning)...sort of an oddball video...I love youtube... :D

I had the Disney record of all their " greatest hits" growing up
Supercalif...whatever
Chim Chimeree
We are Siamese
etc
The " I want to be like you" song was my favorite but for years i thought it was Louis Armstrong
:D

Once I discovered Louis Prima I'd have to say that Jump Jive and Wail or Just a Gigolo are my favorites

Ahem. Maybe, although as you know this is the only place people call me by that name. The clip does fit in with my current Sopranos obsession though. :D

Look at the faces in that clip as the camera pans over them. They look like Renaissance paintings, like the Borgias.

heres an example of the timing live
amazing stuff

I never thought about the fact that they did all this stuff in one take, but of course they did back then. It is amazing. And see I was right; I'd had you pegged for a Spike Jones fan.

I know what you mean about not finding what you want. I really wanted a clip of Louis Jordan doing Knock Me a Kiss (which I just adore), but no such luck.

I was out looking for this movie today. There's a great independent music and film chain up here, Bullmoose Music, but that was a no-go, too. And it's your fault I want to see it again! :D

This song

is the first Gentle Giant tune I was able to relate to..I had to learn to listen to the disharmony to find harmonics from my buddie..thank for teaching me about this band...

Sam & Dave

Hold On, I'm Comin'

Hold On, I'm Comin' (this is a different clip from above, with incredible dancing--these guys were wonderful showmen)

Soothe Me, Baby

When Something is Wrong With My Baby

Wilson Pickett

Midnight Hour (great live version)

Mustang Sally (not a video of Wilson Pickett, but it's such a great song, you can just close your eyes and dance)

Solomon Burke

He has been around a long, long time and if you don't know who he is, you should! He has one of the best soul voices ever. And he has a beautiful heart--you can just hear it in his music.

Feeling retro today. Heck, prolly I feel retro everday. In fact, I think I effing define retro.

Oops. Sorry, Rybka. ;)

Anyway. I loved this song when I was a kid. Great guitar riff.

Yeah, yeah. Long time ago. So what's your problem?

Retro is good! I loved The Young Rascals. Felix Papillardi (sp?) had a great, soulful voice. I also loved Groovin. My sister's name was Leslie and she always said that one part of the song "you and me endlessly..." was about her. :D

Anyway, what do you call a jelly-flavored whale?

Moby Grape, of course.
