I think I might be unacceptable by American standards. I have not seen Star Wars. I don't mean just the new one. I mean any Star Wars. Actually i saw the Phantom menace but I am trying to block it out of my memory. So I am going to have to rent the old three movies and watch them before I go to see the Clones. I need reassurance. Please tell me they are not so bad as Phantom menace. Please?

rock on!

no they're not AS bad as the phantom menace but dont rush out to rent them...it was cool in the 70s i guess but i think they should retire the light sabers

I expect it won't be great, maybe not terrible but mediocre. I feel obligated to go though. I mean it is kind of like a cultural thing. You know "Where were you when...?"

I have never seen Star Wars either. I quite like Sci-Fi stuff and love Star Trek but as trivial as it may sound something always came across when I wanted to watch Star Wars. And now I feel like I would be totally confused if I went to see Episode II without having seen the previous 4 movies. :(

Halo :rose:

I don't think you should be obligated to see anything. I have avoided Star Wars, I have avoided Titanic, and I'm just fine. Cultural norm or not, I just am not interested.

Same here. I am not into Scifi though so that will make it even harder for me to get into. I will still go see it though- hell and all the others too. So I can feel more American.

I saw the first Star Wars in 1978 ish, I think and found it unconvincing bilge. Pre- deconstuctionist days, of course, so maybe I should try again. That was the epoch of structuralism and I tried to let the film speak to me and I fell asleep.

WATCH THEM

Oh my god you have not seen star wars !!

I must have seen them 50 times each your problem is that you will not see them in the Cinema the impact is lost a little on the small screen.

Ep 5 is probably the best but Harry is the one who makes all the moves.

Watch them if you are a trekkie you will like them I still like the original trek epps you are smart enuf to realise technology has come a long way but rent the updated virsions so the effects are better.

May the Force be with you

Mike

I think I'm in LOVE

I personally think it's wonderful that you haven't seen them. I had not seen them either, because I was born in 76 and grew up in a non-TV and VCR household for the most part, and somehow I never got around to it. Then someone took "pity" on me and made me sit through all three of the first ones. I was not impressed. I think that it's necessary to see them in the context of the 70s to truly appreciate them, which I didn't, and don't. I did see Phantom menace, and thought it was abominable, although Natalie Portman is a nice piece of eye-candy. So don't feel obligated, and if you do decide to see them, take some nice speed first so you don't fall asleep like I did.

I think I have probably just made 60,000 enemies with this one post. Please don't yell at me. I grew up in a TV deprived house, and am somewhat culturally lacking as a result. Yell at my mom instead, OK?

Sorry, I wouldn't know. I'm like you, I've never seen Star Wars.

It never grabbed my interest either actually...I've never seen one...

I grew up in a No Tv house too. I saw my first Indiana Jones flick when I was 20. I have never seen ET, or Close Encounters of the third kind, or Lethal Weapon or--anything really. It is weirder that I really like movies and am making up for it now. I have a TV and DVD player, but not television channels. I hate TV shows. most of them are stupid and intelligence insulting. I rent a lot of movies though and am a late blooming film buff.

that's not weird at all!

It is totally different to be control of the programs, instead of the programs programming you. Movies are a *good* thing, but only when consumed selectively. There are so many bad ones out there. It's like going to a buffet and only eating what you like, instead of piling up your plate with everything and getting a bad stomachache.

So what movies have you seen recently that you'd recommend to a fellow newcomer?
