I remember the Challenger space shuttle exploding when I was a kid. I had a birthday a few weeks later and asked for a Challenger explosion birthday cake (I don't think my little brain fully grasped exactly what had happened). My mom made me a Halley's Comet birthday cake instead. Good call, mom.

I was working in the news media at that time. Part of my job was to call local police departments just to ask if they were working on anything we may be interested in. 99 times out of 100 they would say no, and it sort of evolved into a running joke between me and them.

But that day, it was my phone that rang, and it was one of those police departments I was always calling. They were asking ME if I had heard about the shuttle.
