Hypothyroidism

La Principessa-Thanks for the information. You don't know how much it has helped.

Now I'm reading about hypothyroidism and heavy periods.

The more I read.. the more I feel this is my problem. Everything is me to a "t".

I always wanted Hypothyroidism so I could go on medication to boost my metabolism. Was never meant to be...

There has been a scandal in Canada because some disreputable doctors have prescribed Levothiroxin as a weight loss assist.

Bloody dangerous!

but remember you can't just read something and diagnose yourself. I didn't even KNOW what was wrong...just thought I was slowing down. Just close the WebMD window, relax and call the doc in the morning. he/she can answer your questions just as easy without all the extraneous information.

I know.. I know.

But.. I'm one of those that has to read anything and everything. ;)

I closed google and all web pages that I had open on the subject.

LOL

Actually.. I'm not hungry. I'm never hungry. I think I'll go read my daughter a story and get her to bed.

Thank you again for the information.

not a problem. And I did the same thing. Had to find all I could on all the tests and the entire subject. Then wondered why I put myself through all the stress once it was over. lol

take the cookie to your daugher. It's an Italian thing to solve problems with food.....be glad I didn't give you some spaghetti!!!

I've been diagnosed with hypothyroid for almost 3 years now. It took me a while to accept it---didn't want to take a pill for the rest of my life. Now that I've been taking them I won't ever give them up. I have symptoms similar to what you described you feel. I was tired all the time, depressed (but didn't know it), irratable, didn't want to be touched, skin drier then the Sahara, gained weight for now reason........need I go on. The most common cause for hypothyroid is Hashimoto's disease. It is an autoimmune disorder in which your body's immune system decides that the thyroid gland no longer belongs an thus attacks it like it would any other common intruder. This can lead to a goiter----aka---swelling of the gland. If I don't take my meds I get heartburn almost immediately, don't like to be touched, irratable, tired, and dry skin. I don't think my sex drive has been affected that much though----maybe a little due to being awake a little more. My apetite decreased dramatically when I first went on the meds----nothing ever sounded good. Now though my appetite is back to where it was and I haven't gained anymore weight.

One big reason to look into your thyroid levels is that if you are hypo, there's a good chance your cholesterol is elevated. This is not good for you and in my case caused the removal of my gallbladder last year due to cholersterol stones.

Other than having a needle jabbed into your arm for some bloodwork, being treated for hypothyroidism is fairly painless.

I wish you lots of luck. Please go and get tested. It's such a simple thing to treat and if it is hypo, believe me you'll feel much better with treatment.
