One or two US$20 bills is the usual payoff for cops on the road. Just don't be obvious by waving cash around. Worry more about troops at highway checkpoints -- they're better armed and more likely to search your vehicle. But there's a trick. Leave laundry scattered in the car. Neither Mexican cops nor troops like rummaging through laundry. That always worked for us.
