Does humor lose the element of being funny when it's truly malicious?

No, not really. Or else we wouldn't laugh at it. Not that everyone does.

Not if a person is mean spirited. They always think it's funny.

I'm confused. Lav's here, she's not here, she's here.

Whatever.

Hi sweetness.

I'm around just to see your smiling face. :p

I think you should be banned from using frog faces in the next 10,000 posts, just to even out.

Malice cannot damage real humor.

The most effective flames are always the funniest.

Not necessarily, but just making cruel comment with no real wit or syntax isn't funny.

You ruined your post with that banana.

I wasn't sure what my reaction should be to killing the thread. So I decided on dancing.

Not that it matters anymore. It's alive again and a banana-fest over there.

HeavyStick, I like how your monkey is staring hungrily at the 'nana.

Here's a better question:

Is how funny a comment is judged to be based on the comment or the person making the comment?

From what I've seen of the board, people who are either old time posters or well-liked can make rude and malicious remarks and everyone either thinks they're funny or at the very least, they let it slide by without comment.

Let someone who is new or is not overly popular make the same remark and all hell breaks loose.

Humor's in the eye of the beholder. Or, as the great Mel Brooks once said, "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die."

Whether it's funny or not depends on your feelings towards the target of the "joke" in my opinion.

And that's not at all like it is off the Board. People with a shared history can put comments in context, or they simply share the same sense of humor. New people can only be taken at their face value. On an internet site, the sum of their recent posts is all we have to judge them by.

Well speaking from reading many angry PM's, it's the content. Yes a well known person can get away with a little more. IMO it's because people have understood that person(s) thinking.

Agreed but that's not my point. I think that who it is that makes the joke is just as important as what the joke is and that determines how funny it is.

Your spelling is on par with that of most grad students. But you do it with more panache.
