Humiliation: Domain of 'Strokers'?

So I have my question here; I have a few questions really. So is Humiliation a genre of it's own? I would say it would have something to do with the nc/r but only about half of those stories or less seem to employ it. But my other question is that if it's the domain of stroke erotica, at least in the majority, could it have a place in the more mainstream erotica without alienating too many people?

I'm curious because (though none of my submissions have been approved for this name) mine and most of what I've read when combined with character development comes out pretty creepy. Like stalker creepy. Possibly this is just me, but I'm interested in what any authors have to say.

Well, I'm pretty sure there was a question about this at some point. I personally lump humiliation in with S/M since any m I have ever known personally, seems to enjoy this aspect quite a lot.

I think what you're asking about is whether humiliation stories with character development can still be erotic or whether they'll invariably run off into creepy territory. Is that right?

I think it's mainly the nature of the humiliation. It's one thing to make someone go to work with no underwear, or make them admit their secret sexual desires. It's another thing entirely to have someone stick their head in a toilet. One has some subtelty and finesse; the other is just gross. I don't think characterization has anything really to do with it.

Gross is relative, though. I don't know. I didn't mean that I was leaning towards the stalker creepy stories, but I guess it's the age-old problem. A sort of a virgin/whore double standard that makes it difficult to write or find written well. Usually what I see is hardcore humiliation way out of place in light softcore with little in the way of detail. Or there's hardcore humiliation but no characterization. I think it is in many relationships though, as each person struggles to get their cookies first, so to speak.

I think the concept of Humiliation is broad enough to be almost a genre, but that it's more a subgenre of Dominance and Control. Dr M is right, it really depends a great deal on what form the humiliation takes and what the perception of it by (and the consequence(s) it has for) all the characters involved.

So, I would say it is an aspect of BDSM, as well as NonCon, but that it could play a part in almost any story...especially if the plot and character are the focus and the humiliation is an element, but not necessarily the crux, of the plot.

Personally I think it fits nicely in bdsm, and sometimes fetish, but since 'bdsm' has gotten to be a cosy 'lifestyle', 'humiliation' is less in the picture since good doms *always* try to enhance, not tear down pride and self respect!

So my theory is that 'real' humiliation has to spill over to nonconsent (the nasty ones) or loving wives.

Are you saying the "victim" always seems 'creepy' or to have a 'creepy' preference, insofar as s/he is developed as a character?

I suppose that could be said of any deviant; I find exhibitionist masturbators kinda creepy, at least in r.l.

As dr m suggests, there's also 'fun' and 'adventurous' quasihumiliations (like being forced to strip in public, when one is dying to, and has a hot body and an appreciative audience), versus nasty ones. I'd say though, that's the diff between lite, 'fun' quasi-ds and harder SM stuff.

By the way, it might be mentioned that in the movies and stories, and maybe in real life, women are frequent seekers of 'real' humiliation.... does that make it less creepy? i.e., is it the male seekers esp. that seem creepy?

Humiliation isn't a genre in and of itself, it is a tool within several genres. N/C/R and BDSM are the major categories where it is a mainstay, but also in some Interracial, gay, lesbian, TG/TS works and in a good portion of the loving wives.

It all depends upon how you define humiliation and who is being humiliated and how. Also a major point is how does the cahracter percieve the humiliation?

On a personal level it's pretty humiliating to have someone talk dirty to me, but in the right circumstance it is also incredbily arousing. Humiliation is an emotional response and like most emotional responses being able to use it in appropriate situations is important to being a good author. Deftly selecting your appropriate situation is the key.
