I was paging through thesaurus when I stumbled upon this word.

floccinaucinihilipilification

I'm not going to try to pronounce it. I'm afraid I might damage myself. I also suspect that speaking it out loud would summon a demon from the Outer Dark.

*sigh* I'm sorry, Rob, but we're going to have to ritualistically kill you now. You weren't suppose to find that word.

Looks medical or disease-y to me. Let's see... I think "pili" means hair and "ification" might have something to do with a process. Sorry, guy, I think you're going to have some really gross hair growing in some really uncomfortable places.

Oh, that's easy...you just have to watch Jeopardy...

It's the act of rating one of my stories...

My husband says that word all the time-like a swear word :p

I think by the time you got it all out you may have forgotten why you were swearing in the first place...

I love wikipedia, it has a pronouncer. Kind of sounds like

flossy-nossy-ni-hill-if-i-cay-sion

I really liked the flossy-nossy part.

What a simply wonderful juxtaposition of symbols!

Who cares what it means????

...applicable to this post.

When I was a kid I read in the guinness book about the longest place name in the world, I literally spent hours attempting to pronounce it.
When I was in my mid teens someone released a record called (I think) The Lone Ranger. The first line was the name of this place in New Zealand. Now whether this is the correct pronounciation or not it took me about 2 or 3 days to learn it.

"Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu"

pronounced as:

Tau-matta-wacka-tanny-hanna-coo-a-you-oo
Tamma-tie-a-turry-pucka-hocka-picky-monga
honna-nukoo-pocka-wenna-wacka-tanna-ta-hoo

Then the song added the next for scansion.

matta-coo-eye-tenna-noo-a-kawa-micky-toora.

It shouldn't be pronounced like that as it comes from Latin and should have hard consonants. Flokki-nawki-ni-hilly-pilly-fik-ashun.

It was invented by the Victorians to prove that they knew it and means doing nothing. Flocci, nauci, nihil and pili are all Latin for nothing.

I thought it was some kind of reference to dental sex - flossing while fornicating - I was actually looking forward to Rob's story :D

Fabulous, I can just hear the AllBlacks chanting that with appropriate tongue wobbling.......but..........what does it mean? All those words have literal meanings, like the Welsh one.........

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch..... which means
"The church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio's of the red cave".

(And yes, I CAN pronounce it. It was a project of mine when I was 14, and I can still remember it. Unfortunately, the Welsh language does not lend itself to phonetic representation. It's the pronounciation of the double-L, which sounds like someone clearing phlegm from their throat. *blink*

God I LOVE that one...lol...our group of 8 once tried to spend 5 consecutive lunch breaks and free periods trying to learn to say it...there was much in the way of odd facial expressions being pulled...and tongue mpvements many of us didnt know we could do (of course, i put them to good use now ;)) :p

Just because that is how the Roman's would have said the word, doesn't mean that is how people now actually do say the word. Plenty of words have been corrupted, many even in the last generation. My favorite such is "forte". Look it up in a dictionary more than 20 years old and there is one accepted way to pronounce the word when it means a strong point or strength (as opposed to "forte" when it means to play loudly and is pronounced with two syllables). Now you look in a dictionary and both are accepted.

I'm kind of surprised no one has made the obvious joke yet...

I have something else that is long and hard and is difficult for your to get your mouth around...
