Well here we go!!

I've written all my current posts in the 1st person. Basically because I'm lazy and afraid to ask you ladies what you think about!!

I'm feeling adventurous, because my lead female character is developing nicely and to further that development I was contemplating switching my verse.

Seriously considering would be a better choice.

However, I'm shit scared of saying, thinking and doing the wrong things when writing the female character.

I would like to be believable, to a point, but real input would allow me to write a lot more truthfully.

If you could respond, any help would be appreciated.

Real Life recent experience with a woman tells me that almost anything SHOULD be believable.

Best advice I can give you: write how you think the character would act, don't worry about it being from the female voice. They are just as screwed up in the head as us men are and there are very few "universal" rules about how they act. Worry more about getting to know the character before you write than the gender of the character. Once you know the character, you will know how to write them. QED.

On the other hand if you don't take the time to really get to know your character then they will all come off as cardboard and not be "real" to the reader.

So how do you get to know a character before writing them? This was something that I struggled with for a long time and, not to sound egotistical but, I think I'm making progress. What I do is tell myself stories about the character. Stories about their childhood, teen years, dream up little things that shaped them even as adults. Each character gets new stories to shape them.

I don't write these stories down, just tell them to myself over and over again, like when I'm lying down, trying to go to sleep, or sitting in an incredibly boring meeting with the President of the company droning on and on about how wonderful he is. After just a couple of days of doing this, I really feel like I know the character and then I can write the story.

Hope maybe this helps.

Darling, there are all kinds of brains in the world. And yes, some of them are male and female. But if you just look at the brains, what they know, their emotional levels and the cultural input, they are pretty much interchangeable.

I've know several women who come off as the most threatening biker you've ever met. And conversely, several men who could give Martha Stewart a run for her money.

And if you reply with something about "normal," you're gonna get hit.

So, just follow the character and make certain "it" says what it should be saying, acting, doing and you'll be fine.

A clue...

...read what women write as erotica to get an idea how a woman might (key word) think. It is deliciously different--so different in fact--that many publishing houses see fit to have different imprints for erotica written by women.

Just a humble suggestion...

Read women's magazines dudes.

Now it ain't going to make you like macho, and no one is going to buy "you are doing research".

But the best way to understand women (short of investing several years living with one), is to go and read about what they like at the mundane level.

Don't automatically assume erotica for women is superior to Woman's Day, Cosmopolitan, Chatelaine etc.

Sure some of the articles in those magazines sound funny. But remember that stuff is written for specifically female audiences.

Its the same reason if women want to understand guys, read what makes us who we are (no not Playboy, I am talking Field and Stream, or EQ etc.).

Now I love the outdoors. I spend six to eight weeks a year tromping around the mountains with no one but myself to give shit to, that's what it takes to keep me from going postal. I read "Backpacker", "Nature Photography", and "Mountain Biker" magazines and I just got to know. Is there really a magazine called "Field and Stream"? I've heard the name before, but always thought it was some stupid redneck joke.

And isn't that GQ instead of EQ?

Personally, I adore Maxim magazine. I love their humor and the feeling like I'm seeing into this secret men's world.

When I first wrote about a male character, I had a couple of men read my story to see if they could find anything that didn't ring true for men. I got some valuable feedback from them. They thought of things that hadn't occured to me. For example, in a scene where a man was wearing a cock ring inside his underwear while flaccid, they suggested that he worry about it pinching his ball sac. Not possessing a pair of balls myself, that hadn't occured to me. If you have some women friends that are sufficiently introspective, ask them read your story and give feedback specific to a feminine viewpoint.

Yes there is a Field and Stream

But I might have goofed on EQ being GQ (I dont read either)

I also dont read Field and Stream but thats only because I don't like to go fishing enough.

My manly magazines are FineWoodWorking and Canadian Homeworkshop in my case (although both are not unfemale friendly, just the world needs more ladies in those areas).

Wha woman think????

I admire whisper and closet fr your suggestion and input. Guys thanks for your input but, well you're guys.

Though Ray hits it on the head to the original reason for sking this. Anything is possible, believable etc.

Having been married 13 years I know, but I still don't REALLY know what she thinks.

So, thak you gentleman, but the ladies have the floor!!

I love the smell of napalm in the morning---- it smells like VICTORY!

i was given a trick to try and found it worked incredibly well. so well it scared me at first.

use a real life person in a story. change the names. but use their features and put them into a situation you know they have been in.

from there move outward. put the person into a situation you think they haven't been in and see how they would react.

maybe start with a female relative or female friend who takes your fancy...

once you see how well you do with that, then move along another step and create your own female character.

good luck :) i hope this helps a little bit.

Well, it's been quite a long time since this has happened!

Ah, I'm a girl. Jeez.

What Women Think?

Perhaps too long Whisper!!!

As to your suggestion I have and I will ask them for an opinion.

Might I also direct you to the post by another person of your gender, Wild had a fantastic idea.

Well guys, Ladies 3, Gentleman 0

Let's pause now to take a station break!!!

But seriously, thanks for your input Whisper, I appreciate you taking the time and trouble to help.

(A galant bow)

Yours faithfully

A few years ago when I first joined Lit, people used to routinely assume I was a man, for some reason. Heh heh.

far out Mac!

do you have shares in jon.hayworth's flower business?

*winking*

hey, i'm glad you liked the suggestion. i hope it works for you. let us know how it goes please.

*sigh*...i am such a pushover when someone gives me flowers *wink*

Could be worse Whisper

I get mistaken for a girl all the time. But on Lit thats not an incredibly unlikely thing.

But I also get mistaken for a girl on sites that have enough testosterone to choke an elephant. And yet they still think a person with the nick name Les The Sarge could in some way be a girl. Just because my actual name is Leslie

After all Leslie is a girl's name.

Wait a minute Leslie is a fine old scottish male name errrr.:)

Could be worse? Don't I know it. Someone said to me once, "Did anyone ever tell you that you look like Linda Hunt?"

What Women Think??

I just have to say that I've been a woman for over twenty years now and I still don't know what's on my own mind, let alone another female's.

What did Sigmund say?
"OH yes" "" The man that understands the workings of womans mind is surely MAD""

But hey who'd be without them;)

What Women think?

Thanks to you all!

It's been very enlightening, and slightly frightening to hear that men and women think alike. (sorry for the rhyme, can't help it. I'm a poet and don't even know it)

Damn did it again.....

The old adage that "Women need a reason to have sex, men just need a place" may no longer be true?

Is it possible?

To all the brilliant hearts and minds that visit this slice of hard disk located in cyberspace

"You're the best."

Hey this thread can't stop here I was just getting to learn something about woman that I didn't know before.

This writter says keep talking ladies. Try this question how does a woman read a map?????

How long is be ready in 10?

I want more sex but he does'nt know it!!!
This one always gets me-Tell the stupid bastard!

how does woman read a map?

odd you should ask this...

i hold it the right way up, i follow (using my pointed finger at times) the road and i SUGGEST to the driver that maybe we should be going along such-and-such a road as it's the shortest route.

but the DRIVER prefers to follow HIS nose... hence we tend to have little 3 hour diversions occasionally.

***

How long is be ready in 10?

oh that's easy too. it means, i'll be ready when I am ready, no sooner and no later.

rofl any the wiser dear?

***

I want more sex but he doesn't know it...

hmmm to tell him means he will be ready right now without preamble or foreplay and what's the holdup?

it would sure be nice if he could read my mind ocassionally and
grab me quick when the fleeting thought of rampant raging sex crosses my mind. though i'm kinda glad he didn't mindread in the middle of the mall on saturday. *whew*

***

sure hope this helps hitchhiker
:D
