We can't blame anyone for being a bit confused about the interactions between lubes and safer sex supplies and/or sex toys. Uh, what are the combinations that you aren't supposed to use? Is this anything like no red wine with fish? Or no white shoes after Labor Day? That's it, no white condoms after red wine!
But it really isn't that complex. There are two interactions that you need to be aware of as a savvy safe-sex consumer:
Latex and Oil-based Products.
Lipids (a fancy name for oils and fats) degrade latex. This isn't a particularly subtle effect; latex gloves, condoms, and dental dams can be reduced to tatters in seconds by oil-based products.
More things contain oil than you might realize. Nearly all of the Kama Sutra products contain oil. However, all of the sex lubes we carry -- with the exception of Mens Cream -- are safe for use with latex. If you use, ahem, more traditional lubes such as Crisco, these almost always contain fats and oils that can degrade latex; Crisco itself is particularly powerful.
This caution applies to latex dildos as well. The jelly dildos and butt-toys we sell are made of latex, and will be ruined by oil-based products. Ditto the material in the Cyberskin products; the manufacturers are very cagey about protecting their patent and haven't revealed the exact makeup of these oh-so-modern sex-toy materials, but we're pretty sure latex is in the mix. And although the manufacturers of the Fleshlight tell us that there is no latex in the Fleshlight, they do suggest that you not use oil-based lubes with it, as it will be difficult to clean off without damaging the toy. The same is true for the Silky Bendable Dildo and the Futurotic products.
Silicone Lubes and Silicone Toys.
The new kids on the block in the lube department are silicone-based lubes. We sell two, Wet Platinum Premium Body Glide, BodyFluid, and Eros Bodyglide, all of which we like a lot. Silicone lubes are 100% latex safe, so you don't have to worry about condoms breaking (at least, not from that).
But the makers of some silicone sex toys have indicated that silicone lubes can degrade silicone sex toys with extended use. Reports on this interaction are mixed, and it may be that silicone lubes are safe with some silicone sex toys and not with others. But to be on the safe side, we suggest that you avoid using this combination. And if you use condoms on your silicone dildos and butt-toys (a great idea, by the way, both for easy cleanup and safer sex), do be aware that most lubricated condoms use some sort of silicone-based lube. So we definitely advise you to use non-lubricated condoms for this purpose.
If you wish to be ultra-safe, we recommend using a water-based lube; water-based lubes have no bad interactions with either latex or silicone. Our personal favorite is Liquid Silk, or Maximus if you prefer a heavier lube. Probe, Astroglide, Kama Sutra Love Liquid, and Forplay Flavored Lubes also have their loyal and devoted fans. Whatever you use, use a lot of it (it is hard to have too much lube)...and have fun!
