How to pick the right gun

Statistics require controlled sample populations. Our demographics are dramatically different then yours.
While I still had your unedited post on a screen and about to post to that - I will adjust my response to your edit.

How well do you believe the average pharmacist, accountant, mom, dad and crazy uncle will be in addressing/deterring violence generated by any demographic if violence is their intent? Have the average pharmacist, accountant, mom, dad and crazy uncle now been bestowed a marshal's badge?

There is indeed a difference in demographics, particularly the number of guns within the population. The lack of gun regulation, lack thorough background checks, and whole industries fuelling paranoia to bump up gun sales in US just means more guns more shootings more deaths. Easier access to guns or just the continuation of current lack of control over gun possession helps how? This cycle is not working for US and of course it appears totally irrational.

Sure, crazy shit happens here in Australia as well - just not with the crazy amount of homicides by firearm per capita. Gun regulation works. "Oh but you had a shooting situation in Sydney recently, one person could have taken that person out" - the perpetrator would have just planned different tactics if they feared not getting sufficient duration of attention. So if Australia had the fear mentality of US and the same number of (unregulated or not) guns per capita in order to protect from that nutter in Sydney, how many other deaths would there have been in our society because of the very existence of those guns and ease of the home burglar, disenchanted teenager and deranged spouse to obtain and use them.

Yep, I find average city people talking of guns highly sad and the deaths of innocent people due to the ease of guns getting into the wrong hands distressing. Such reluctance for change is lunacy - being screwed over by corporations and gun manufacturers who feed off US public gullibility speaks for itself, the highest rate of homicides per capita in advanced countries. Why would any other "advanced" country envy that?

Here, much of the gun violence is in the black slums. I'm safe saying almost all the guns are stolen and possessed by felons. We have plenty of laws and no enforcement. Here's the hoot: Nothing has changed in 150 years. Niggers are as violent today as they were when emancipation came along, and the police are afraid to disarm them. If it was me I'd burn the slums to the ground, then collect all the pistols buried in the ashes.

Alright guys. Y'all need to stop. The question that Miranda (the OP) posed was about getting rid of hogs, javalinas, and possibly coyotes from around her property. In this case fencing wouldn't work and she already said the smaller animals were bieng deterred by wire and non toxic repellents. How this turned into a debate over the second amendment is beyond me. I do not think she would welcome a racist sumbitch on her thread. She said it was resolved and has a hunting rifle for backup. Wild hogs are dangerous as hell. And coyotes can desimate livestock costing a ton of money in the process. Hell I live down the road from her.

I agree we should take this to another location, as Miranda's question has been resolved. Let us be courteous.

I still think the discussion is interesting, NightL. If you agree we can continue it either on the general board or pm. Sound good?

It would be nice if you weren't repeating the lies that are spouted by the gun control nuts here in the US. There is no lack of gun regulation. There is no lack of thorough background checks. Yes there have been some slip ups with regard to mentally ill buyers and the private sale of guns could be tightened up, but no system is perfect, especially when government is involved.

The only fuel is that which Washington is throwing to appease the liberals. Every time Obama mentions the second amendment and further controls, sales spike. And it's not only right leaning purchasers who are buying.

There are controls placed on the ownership of guns. There are sufficient background checks. There are thousands, if not millions, of gun owners who haven't shot up a theater or a school. You paranoia and your gullibility in believing what the liberal media and interest groups yell, is unbelievable.

Try doing your own research and stay away from places like MSNBC and Salon and Huffington.

I have read coyotes rarely attack humans. I would think small pets or children would be more in danger since they could look like prey. Racoons and possums are dangerous and carry disease. I would think animal control unless they do not do service calls in your neck of the woods. I guess either a hunting rifle or a shotgun for the wild hogs, javalinas, etc. Good luck Miranda.

A quick thrust of a blade should do the trick. No need for a gun. ;)

Go to your local barber shop/beauty parlor and ask them to collect the cut hair in some garbage bags (supply the bags). When enough is collected scatter it around the area where you want to keep the critters away. For some reason wild animals don't like the scent of cut human hair. You will have to replace it every few months as the smell goes away.

True ...BUT, they interbreed with wild Dogs who are not and neither are their offspring, afraid of humans. they can also get big and even smarter than they were.

This is a problem!
