You guys should read Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling, he does a good job explaining the metaphysics of the Abraham and Isaac story. Don't beat yourselves up, most people's brains have a hard time understanding metaphysics, that's why we have religion, to package difficult concepts in a metaphor.

If you subscribe to the documentary hypothesis with regard to the origins of the Torah and separate the J from the E source you will realize that this story originally had a much darker (and more logical) conclusion.

Clue. The ram/sheep was a late addition to the story

The Bible makes it crystal clear that Isaac was not Abraham’s only son, and that God told a lie when He said that Isaac was.

Not crystal clear or I wouldn't disagree. Isaac was the only son that was promised to Abraham so he could be the father of many nations. Isaac was the only son of his marriage to Sarah. Although God blessed all the children of Abraham. Only Isaac received the inheritance for being his son. :rose:

Sarah was Abraham’s half-sister, so Ishmael got the better genetic inheritance.

And we’re supposed to think the Sodomites were bad.

Got a link?
Or, suggest a google? I'm not having luck.

That doesn't add up, Ishmael was the ancestor of Mohammed and the Moslems so he clearly achieved far more than Isaac's decendents as a father of Nations. It is just as logical to suggest that Yaweh was planning for the domination of the Moslems.

Though it makes far more sense to read the Torah as mythology written down more than a thousand years after the event to explain the then present problems.

There are those who claim that Abraham actually killed Isaac, and that the bit with the ram was added for an enlightened audience.

There are also those who claim that Abraham never intended to sacrifice Isaac at all. Why else would he have taken servants with him?

I think the whole thing is bogus. There’s no mention of why a sacrifice was needed. What horrible sin was Abraham guilty of? The second angel tells us that Abraham will have a huge family because of his obedience. But he already got that promise five chapters ago.

Jeremiah 19:5 says that God never asked for human sacrifice. That bit gets ignored by the Christians, who insist that Jesus had to die, and the crucifix was an altar.

I think that the Bible explains it much better than any Kierkegaard's Fear ever could.

It depends on what you value. Isaac got the land that is Israel. If you know about the prophecy of the second coming of Christ and the reign he will have here on earth it is important. I don't think this is about domination it is about justice.

God never asked the people of Baal for a human sacrifice. The verse you quoted was specific to that.

Jeremiah 19:5
They have built the high places of Baal to burn their children in the fire as offerings to Baal--something I did not command or mention, nor did it enter my mind.

Baal was a fertility god that the Israelites were sacrificing to in Jeremiah's day.
