It's called the Bible. There is a place called Hades, which is a holding place for the dead. The condemned are already being tormented there and after the Judgement they will go to The Lake of Fire or Gehenna. Christians tend to call both places hell, but yes there is a distinction. Hell is actually the grave. The saved souls before Christ's resurrection went to the Paradise side of Hades, AKA Abraham's Bosom. After the resurrection of Christ, they were taken into heaven, which is where Christians currently go upon death.
As far as Christianity goes, there is no “holding place”. All souls stand before God. Then, there eternal fate is determined. Hell isn’t the grave either. It’s a place of fire and torment - a total separation from God. Find you a different book to read because the one you’re reading is fucked up.
