How to delete search engine cache files?

When I call up Google, for instance, and put my pointer near the box into which go my search parameters, a box drops down that contains the parameters I’ve used in the past.

If I type the “A” into the box, everything goes away but the words/prases beginning with “A”.

If I add “n”, then everything goes away but the words/phrases beginning with “An”.

My question: how do I delete a search engine drop-down list of previously used parameters?

Tools --> Internet Options --> General --> Delete Files --> Delete all offline : doesn’t do it.

Tools --> Internet Options --> General --> Clear History : doesn’t do it.

Tools --> Internet Options --> Content --> Autocomplete --> Clear Forms : doesn’t do it

Tools --> Internet Options --> Content --> Autocomplete --> Clear Passwords : doesn’t do it

How do I clear it?
Harold? Anyone?

(cp'ed to the HT forum)

there is probably a much easier way to do it, but what i do i go on the box that is dropping down, select one item after the other and just click 'delete'

that does the trick for me. :)

Hope that helps.

Someone with more technical expertise may be able to help you, but it has to do with cookies.

Not chocolate-chip cookies, but the cookies that your computer uses to remember past websites that you have visited. If you are using Windows Explorer go into the Windows directory.

From this directory you have two options Cookies and History. By deleting all of the cookies in your Cookies folder, and by deleting everything in your History folder you have taken a large step in clearing your cache.

Now this may not cover your tracks as completely as you wanted, and if anyone out there can tell either you or me how to wipe away websites we have visited more comprehensively I would appreciate it also.

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH

I hate when I have a brain fart!

I know how to stop this.. but for the life of me I can't remember how!!!!

I'll see if I can find it..

maybe someone else will come along (probably will just when I figure it out.. LOL)

You need to clean history, memory cache, disk cache, and location bar (in Netscape under Navigator/history in preferences). That might do it.

If its cookies then you need a program to clean cookies out. Which is a good idea to do on a regular basis anyway.

I believe there are free programs to do that - and, if you want - I will find some for you.

What I use is Norton System Works - its not free - but it gives you one of the best anti virus programs, a disc defrag, system and recovery tools AND a program that cleans up cookies.

I run IE, not Netscape.

I have McAfee Online installed and running all the time; like Norton, it's not free but it does the same kinda stuff that Norton does.

I have and use a program called Window Washer (http://www.webroot.com/washer.htm) which, it boasts, "cleans the tracks left behind on your computer by today's latest browsers, including...
•Cache
•Cookies
•History
•Mail Trash
•Drop Down Address Bar
•Auto Complete Data forms
•Downloaded Program Files "

But it doesn't clean the Google drop down former-parameters box, either.

This memory drop down box on my Google toolbar is not clearable by:

1. deleting all my cookies.

2. cleaning up my cache files.

3. turning autocomplete off for everything (which is a pain in the ass, quite frankly).

4. deleteing all my History files.

I don't have this problem with other search engines (Yahoo, for example, or Altavista). It is only with Google and then, only with the Google toolbar engine i have, not the Google i'd find by typing www.google.com into my address window on my IE screen.

Perhaps i need to get rid of Google access in my toolbar?
It's soooooooo handy right there, though.

However, if it means a nasty custody battle cuz my soon-to-be-former husband is a fucking prude, then maybe getting rid of it is the right choice.

see... told you.. someone would find it before me.

I have it unchecked and that is the only thing I can find that would help.

as i said before............ open the drop-down box in the google menu, place the mouse over the first of the listings and keep "Delete" pressed. gone in 1min.

OK Here it is.

I've posted this in another thread a while back. Depending on how you set it up (and setup is fairly easy) this program will clean ALL caches, delete histories of where you've been and what you've viewed, and repair registries. it's similar to Window Washer but a lot more sophisticated and powerful. I wouldn't be without it. Believe me, I learned the hard way.

Here's the url:
