Just asking because it seems fairly obvious to me that one of the servers they have set up is flaking out.
I get this every so often - basically an empty response to me clicking on the stories link, or one of the story genres. I get a response from the server, but it's empty.
In my experience of web development, that usually means there's either a configuration error on a specific server or some dodgy PHP code has been applied, which is crashing the php runtime and as such, unless debug is turned on, you get exactly what I get - nothing.
Further more, I suspect that it's a spill over machine that is misconfigured - when you have a bank of servers, generally server #1 is the one that usually serves up your webpage, unless it's being heavily used, then it spills over into machine #2, and the if that's used, machine #3 etc. So if it's machine #4 that is badly configured, it means that most of the time people don't see it because that's not the machine that is selected to respond to web page queries - you only see the badness when the site is really busy.
Anyway, I want to point this out to the site admins - and offer any assistance I can, - because I don't know about you, but it irritates the crap out of me
