When I started writing I had lots of comments claiming I was a terrible writer and that I cheated at my scores. Now that I have almost 9000 followers I get the urge to write them all and rub it in their faces. I won’t, I don’t think, but I want to. That would be petty. Right?

I highly suspect your followers are not the people that slammed your early writing. And if any of them are... then it just means they had a change of heart.

You write beautifully , your readers must thank you .No point in wasting your time yet really it is your own thing

Maybe a little petty but I think it's a natural feeling. I've found some benefit from the old, "write-the-letter-but-never-send-it" technique. It helped me purge some of that resentment. Your mileage may vary.

If somebody insists you're a terrible writer, I'm not sure writing to them to rub something in their face is a tactically sound maneuver. Now, in a hypothetical joke situation, if they told you you were a terrible shot...

You have to consider that anybody making comments, even if they are a registered member, will probably not respond, may not even read your reply, and possibly have long forgotten what they once wrote.

The best form of revenge is living well, as they say.
What's the other saying in that vein, resentment is drinking poison expecting your enemies to die?

I fall short of the bar sometimes but way less than if I didn't keep such ideas in mind.

We all fall short, but we can still try.

It would be petty AF. That said, sometimes, because we are failable, flawed human beings, we need a little petty retribution as a balm on our bruised ego. Just a little and only sometimes. any more than that is addictive and dangerous for our well-being. If you've ever watched FireFly, the scene where Malcolm is in a sword duel comes to mind.

"Mercy is the mark of a great man," Mal muses, staring down at Atherton's furious face. Despite the established rules of the duel, he doesn't bring down the killing blow — but he does lightly jab his opponent in the stomach with his rapier, and decides, "Guess I'm just a good man." Before walking away, he gets one last light stab in, remarking, "Well, I'm all right."

A little pettiness is human and a balm to the ego. A lot is poisonous and will destroy anyone using it.

Choose wisely.
