How often do you write poetry?

Hello all. Nice to see how the community keeps growing. Who would have thought the non-erotic section would outgrow the erotic?

Good or bad, I like to write at least one a day. When I do that sometimes they can just flow, like I'm channeling perhaps. Sometimes I take breaks of a month or longer. Returning is very hard. I suffer for a while till I finally write something I enjoy. It's the feeling I enjoy while writing. A poet space of sorts. Perhaps I'll know it again.

Finally...someone who understands! I write from the heart; I don't think about having too many elipses....or lines that seem to not flow properly. I do try to work on that. It's just that when I am trying to rhyme certain lines and use words that fit, it will throw it all off. I get urked a bit when I submit a poem to just be READ, not critiqued. Noone seems to appreciate the emotions that went into it. They only seem interested in correcting all the things "wrong" with it. *sigh*

I write every day pretty much--almost never miss. I either am working on something new or revising something from however long ago.

As far as your point though, I think the person who really needs to like your poems is you, more than anyone else. If you're happy with what you created, that's the best. On the other hand, IMHO, all writing should communicate to the reader. If the reader can't make heads or tails out of a piece of writing, then it doesn't work--why even bother sharing it with anyone? And I'm not saying that is the case with anything of yours :), just that I don't get people who post here and make it sound like they want feedback but then, when questioned, say "I just wrote it for me anyway."

Also when I critique, my purpose is to try to help, not find things wrong. For me a critique is never a personal statement about a writer, which is why I always try to focus on how to improve and not on making discouraging value judgments.

I know not everyone agrees with that, and that's fine, too. People who want to post on this board--and aren't interested in critiques--should say so. There's nothing wrong with just posting something here to be read. I always interpret "What do you think?" and the like though as "I want to be critiqued." Maybe we need a sticky for all posters to read on this point because I know I'm not the only one who makes that interpretation.

Some of the comments I see on this board though remind me of a discussion my son and I had repeatedly when he was very little. He would insist that some word he used meant X, even if I showed him the dictionary and said, "No it doesn't. See--it means Y." And he would say "But when I say it I mean X." Well. Fine, but then don't expect people to understand you....

(Sorry for the soapbox, lol, sometimes the English teacher in me comes out and I rant.) :D

Excellent Point Angeline.

I write when I get the urge, lately that has been everyday. But I am stuck on a line and trying to make a peomout of it and it's getting repetitive so who knows.

How many times a week is normal?

perhaps poetry
like gluttony
or debauchery

is best consumed
infrequently

or is it more like lust
blind and unslaked?

No one ever called me

normal.

For so long I waited

like a good girl

to be told This is the way.

The only thing I ever got
was older,
so one day I said

I'll just do what works for me,

and now I fill my days with poetry.
I let the normal people
take care of the world;
they do and mostly let me be.

:) :rose:

Writing from the heart...

If my poems weren't meant to be shared,
Rest assured they wouldn't be aired,
In a feedback forum.

We all want credit where we think credit's due,
But isn't that for your readers to decide, not you?
I'd like a score of five.

But if i'm writing drivel from the ballpoint of my pen,
Wouldn't a meaningful critique be worth it when,
Freely offered?

Accept it as critique not review,
Eventually you'll see that you,
Have improved.

___________

Pretty bad, huh?

lest not we hold our tonugues
nor stifle the ink that bleeds
to write a meaningless issue
does near to fill the needs

a kind word is not unfathomed
a critique not unkind
lost on all the poetry
is a piece of someones mind

What a lame excuse!

SJ...see the title of the thread? How often do you write poetry? It does not say "Invitation to come in and criticize" WHY people write, or HOW they write. Your snide comment was uncalled for and rude.

i picture me in a smoking jacket
pipe in hand
not puffing
just posing with words in a bubble

ahh,
what pleasure this is to write and be a free man and full of myself,
the writer I always
wanted to be near and now
my dream comes true
I am nearer me then ever

oh a couple a day I suppose

Eve's (almost) perfect pie

If you combine breathing and sleeping you could maybe free up a bit more time for poetry.

Why use the extra time for poetry when that 71% could go higher?

Free Time

Why not combine writing sex and having poetry? I mean... writing having sex poetry...

Anyway, it's been done. I think.

 D:heart:

ps What about one of those voice recognition sofware headset thingies? A little awkward, but better than a scratch pad on some dude's shoulder!
:p

Forget headsets and tape recorders. Ever see the film Pillow Book? Of course it produces disposable poetry assuming that um sweating, showering, etc. are involved (which um generally are :) ). Just think of it as performance art.

Pillow Book

It's just a small poem

Writ sliding past murmurs
Against the hush of evening.
Night falls and she loops letters,
Tender threads across your skin.

You can't see them, but turn
Over and breathe life to words.
Under her poem, more poetry stirs.

I write at least once a day usually more.
meanwhile everything I write isn't that good
but
every once in a while lol

My writing is extremely sporadic. Sometimes I go a couple weeks without ever writing anything and then write 50 poems in one day. It's all about what inspiration I get from my everyday encounters and experiences. Although, I can sit down at any point in time and write poetry on command. It's just usually cliched stuff that gets people to leave me alone. I remember in high school guys/girls would come up to me and have me write poems for their girlfriend/boyfriend or if they needed one for a class assignment. It's always been my love and has always come easy to me.
