How much space would be saved if the non-interracting registered users were deleted?

The page where I am listed

The above link contains 30 registered Literoticans. Of these, 18 have never posted anything and apparently dont' need to be saved. I am wondering how much space would be saved if these were deleted? I can't see how storing over 100 pages of B's (Lit handles that begin with "B") can contain approx 50% of non-users and NOT be slowing something down somewhere. Of course, multiply this by 26 letters and that has got to be some sort of volume.
(Not to mention so many cool handles that could be used by real contributers but are locked in by those who forgot they were ever here in the first place.)

Anybody who actually understands this stuff out there? Can someone tell me if deleting all these would speed up the site enough so that we can have search back?

Did you ever think those people might simply read the stories. Or even submit stories.

Not everyone needs to post to the Forums to have value.

And it would save almost zero space.

I can understand your question and the reasoning behind "saving space". Being a registered-but-not-too-interactive member of the board, I'd like to give my reasons for my non-responsiveness. There are times that I only have time to pull up the board for a few minutes and see what's going on with the members. I subscribe to a few threads and like to go in and read them. I would say that I enjoy reading much more than I enjoy posting (will I ever get my avatar:D ?) So, I would say that there are members that love the board but don't have time or the inclination to post. Please, don't throw us out!:)

I think she means people who have zero posts after two years of membership. I noticed this too, when I was going through the giant name list to see what names were taken. Nine out of ten of the names have been around forever, but have no posts. They're hogging a lot of the good names though. Well, except mine, I don't know how that one slipped by.

I went through most of those names over on the main story page, and some had no posts over here, but had stories posted on the site.

Examples of Lit member handles of people who have never posted here.

There are so many more, but I am getting lazy. Several of the unused ones would be great titles. too bad that are inaccessible.

Removing usernames based on the number of posts would have a serious impact on the way the rest of the site works.

For example, Dirty Old Man only has nine posts. Deleting his record from the BB would remove all of my stories from the site because the author's list uses the same database as the BB.

The problem with the search function is that it's a very inefficent search mechanism that reads each and every one of the million plus posts on the BB to find what you'relooking for. It would work faster if the indx function was working, but last time Laurel mentioned indexing the search function, she said it would take all of the server capacity for about 24 hours to complete.

Since the search function searches the threads and posts, reducing the member's database wouldn't affect it much anyway -- that part of the search function works just fine anyway (when it's turned on) -- it's the other part of the search function is what causes slowdowns when it's turned on.

WH,

Thanks for your response.

I was not referring to the deleting anyone who have ever participated other than to sign up (like the names I posted above). I had not thought of the folks who contribute stories when I was originally making this thread, but I am sure that most of those 0 post-ers have never interracted at all outside of signing up because they could.

Of course, this is just my opinion. And it does suck to have to try 20 different potential handles to get one that is not already being held by someone who never intends to return here again.

When the changeover to the shared dtabase went into effect, there were many older authors who never even knew they could sign into he BB with their author name. Many other authors post stories under multiple names, yet post on the BB with none of them.

I would guess that at least half of those with 0 posts are author names. The problem then becomes separating the author rcords from those who register and then chicken out about posting or register to get the added features available to registered users -- like the last read button to keep track of where they left off reading last time.

PS

don't let the impracticality of this idea keep you from thinking of suggestions to make the board better. there are a lot of things I'd like to see done to the board, but they are either impractical, or just not worth the effort required to implement.

Ooooohhhh!
Can i have this one if we shake it loose and make it available?
Can i, huh? Can i?
:p

I'm fairly certain my author name (HillbillyGirl) doesn't have any posts... and i get PM's from people fairly regularly and often who have been registered for ages, but have no posts.

Just because they're not posting, and in some cases, not submitting stories doesn't make them valid members of the board. They give me feedback on my stories, and occasionally on my posts, so I consider them valuable, if fairly silent, Lit members.
