How much PMing goes on?

Just wondering - cos I hardly ever send or receive PMs, but I guess that's a good way of consolidating relationships out here. I've been thinking of the social dynamics of the forum today, and it's only just struck me what a novel way of communicating it is...It's like an enormously long, drawn out conversation, covering a huge range of topics, where everybody can choose who to listen to and what to reply to.

Also, being a thread/consversation starter kind of places you at the top of the social hierarchy for that particular topic. Then there's the fact that some people know each other a lot better than others...

And newbies are another interesting phenomenon, because everybody can see the social bonds being formed - the alliances, the flirting, the scuffles - all is laid bear for the whole world to see, which in real life is what you need gossip for.

Which brings me back to PMing - a closed conversation, that by its nature excludes others from participating in. Now, for me personally, PMs have been more to do with information rather than anything particularly personal. However, I do love getting PMs because it feels like a more meaningful connection; which, in my view, is why most of us tend to spend so much time here.

Any thoughts? Anybody use PMs all the time, or not at all? Are you the sort of person that likes intimate gossips, or someone that like to involve the world at large?

And, most interesting to me, how well do you feel that you know me? I feel like I know people in a fairly 2D kind of way - I know your personal lives, what turns you on, and off etc etc, but I don't the subtle nuances of your physical presence...That's not to say I don't feel a lot of affection for a lot of you, it's just that *hugs or is so much more in real life...

I like PM for conversations that are more intimate in nature that I would ever discuss in an open forum. Some of us are alittle more shy than others. PM is a great way to get to know someone a little more intimately then you would if you restricted your interation to the public threads.

It is a great way to chat and have a bit of a giggle off board, and in private.

Hey guys - to be honest I'd say I'm more shy about PMing someone than just dropping it right out there in the forum - it's like saying something that someone is going to take on board on a personal level compared with randomly dropping a remark into a bustling conversation that will soon be forgotten...

Here's the crux - with a PM you're assuming that the person you're talking to wants to take the time to listen to what you have to say- - and in real life I tend to listen a lot more than talk - it's kinda a negative and positive character trait

Have to agree I send out more PMs than I make posts!

Though I am really good at keeping my PM box empty. Besides lately how else can you get a hold of some of the elders here?

It is like a little underground network hidden from the forums. And yes, all we do is gossip about those who don't get any PMs.

Just to ease your mind I don't discriminate newbie or seasoned, female or male. All you have to do is PM but it helps to have a topic of mutual agreement if I am going to keep PMing.
