It is interesting to hear all the different perspectives inside this forum. We have people very involved in the lifestyle and others who are only semi-active. There are very experienced people and there are also complete novices. There are people who mostly learned from real life and there are folks who received most of their education through the internet. Anyway, out of curiosity, one question I had was just much "equipment" people in this forum own.

I just did a quick tally and I am over $500 myself, which is a lot considering how poor I am.

I have found you get what you pay for! If you buy cheap stuff, you can expect to have to buy more stuff later. Good quality lasts for a long time.

Poor poor broke person here...I'm lucky if I'm able to get gas and food with the same paycheck. I keep telling myself that one day I'll be able to get ALL the toys I want :D

I've been buying things a little at a time. I probably underestimated how much I've spent. There is plenty more to buy though.

I've not spent a whole lot, but I'm still relatively new to this (actively involved for less than a year.) Also, since D and I both do leather work and have a lot of carpentry (D) and craft (me) skills, our outlay is considerably less. Raw materials cost considerably less than finished products! If we added in how much the time costs than I'd probably be up at the next level. But actual dollars, I'm still in the 0-99 $ range.

I dont' know the $ amounts, but Sir and I spend WAY more on attending "events" - weekend BDSM affairs, usually in other cities, etc., and one night trips to the nearest big city with public s&m clubs- than we do on actual equipment. We have most of the basic toys, an assortment of clamps, plugs, floggers, cuffs, rope, etc. etc., and have no space or opportunity for any kind of home dungeon. So our expenses are always those absolutely wonderful weekends away. or the entrance/refreshment charges at the closest public playspace.

i marked to $4999 but i am sure it is more than that over the long run. i marked what i marked because that would be what i have spent in the last 2 years, a big chunk was a violet wand set.
i am always buying something to to mess with and change into a "toy".
right now my attention has been on "beading" differant collars/necklaces, wrist and ankle cuffs, all for show no real useful purpose
i almost always have something i am making or perverting floggers, zippers, collars ect... if my hands kept up with my mind i would need a storage garage

I have been spending way too much money on toys in the past. Now days I try to make them myself with the exception of whips, I can pretty much make anything I want or need. You do not want to know how much money I have saved since then.

Francisco.

Oh, to not be a destitute college student. I'm somewhere around $250 and little of that is directly BDSM. *sighs forlornly*

Wow, this is very interesting to me.

Having skills with leather work and carpentry would be very nice! And spending money for events or clubs was an angle I had not even considered.

I don't want to think about it. Probably over a 1000. Biggest purchase was a spanking bench. My goal now is to replace everything I have bought with homemade items. And hopefully get good enough to sell a few things to others.

*puts on his pocket protector*

Assuming middle values for each range, the average response is a little over US$700.

I imagine most of our imaginations would have little trouble spending ten times that amount if the money was freely available.

Anyway, very interesting...

I replied to the poll last week, but didn't post anything due to time constraints.

What I will say, is that I have been unhappy with about 60% of any purchases that I have made. They either don't fit anatomically for me, or they are just hype.

Ain't nothing like the real thing baby...

I don't want to think about it. I do sometimes get presents from my subs, thank the Goddess!

I haven't spent a cent BUYING a toy, as all my toys, restraints (that I used to have, but were stolen by my ex), etc, were bought by my ex. However, I do spend money on batteries now and again... sol... maybe $100 over the last 3 years?

The most expensive thing I've bought was a leather hood with removable blindfold and gag for about $85. Four leather cuffs around $45. The rest came from Home Depot and I made myself. Overall I guess I've spent about $500 but oh the things I can do now. (pay no attention to the slave hanging from the ceiling)

D.

bun and I have been picking things up at conventions and private "toy makers" for years now, little by little we've built up quite a collection. Quite a few of the pieces cost us over $200.00. Hey, now that I think about it, I wonder if I can get "flogger insurance" ???

Maybe from the good hands people??:D

I do not even want to think about what we have spent. I make most of our equipment as I work with wood, several metals and leather.

When you start buying any of the woods such as Oak, birch, cherry wood or maple you start diging deep in your pocket.

The last rack I built had about $500 in materials and 200 hours ob labor invested. The whipping post was a cheepie at about $50 and 10 hours. Now the wheel is another story. I am into it about $300 and over 200 hours and it is maybe a third finished.

I am glad I saw this post...its nice to know what other people are spending. Sir and I went to a fun little kink shop here in my town today....not a real hard core place, just one of those kinda cutesy chain boutiques that have a little of everything. They had some nice paddles and floggers and things, but the prices were just too damn high...I have seen them online for much less. And all the other things they had were more for play or show rather than real use and wouldnt have stood up to wear and tear.

In terms of actual toys and equipment, I havent spent a dime, but then again...this is my first real D/s relationship and this is our first week together in real life, so his hand and his belt worked just fine until next time *wink*

Cool....sounds like things are going well for you both. I am happy for you but figured you had a good idea of who he was before this week. As to instruments of pleasure and pain, and cost, my experience has been it is much more inexpensive and gratifying to make your own if you have time, energy, and the desire. Otherwise the net doeas seem to be the way to go though is sometimes deceptive as to the product you get in relation to the photo. Bit like those MacDonald's burgers...reality defies the image. LOL :)

Over a grand, less than five. I have no problem with this. This is what I do. For some people, it's a vintage car, for others it's quilts, for me it's making art and doing this.

I spend till it hurts if I see quality I like. I finally learned this lesson from having lots of "ok, I'm poor, but this works" toys, which I am not ashamed of. My philopsophy is to buy the best you can afford. This was taught to me by a painting prof in regard to brushes. If you can only spend five bucks, spend five bucks. If you can spend fifteen, spend fifteen.

I like the stockroom for college students, you can buy things at an ok price that are functional and people won't laugh at you can always upgrade when you have more money.

Floggers I don't skimp on, as these are a favorite, and their comfort matters to me. I bought from someone in the league of Heartwood locally, till she went out of the biz and now I'm at a loss. I'm trying out some stuff from leathercellar in Wisconsin, we'll see.

I'll hold off on getting something, price it, look at different versions. If I see something in someone's bag that I like I will not hesitate to ask the obnoxious questions: where, when, how much?

I'm finding some vendors I like, particularly for fetish attire a local vendor that will bend over backwards to fit me, change my hardware to hypo allergenic, treats me like a goddess, which, when you are buying a $300 dollar corset, I think proper, so long as you're polite in return.

I would imagine that being able to find a good, reliable vendor for your toys and equipment would have at least as many benefits as having a good mechanic you can trust.

I am just starting out, so I am just learning what places locally carry things of interest. Online of course has endless opportunities, but I am a person who really prefers to be able to see something, touch it, examine it before I purchase it (thats why I despise shopping for clothes online...I want to try them on!!)

Stupid Question Time

Did Alabama ever revoke the law on the state's books concerning toys?

i seem to remember a snippet some time in the last few months about the constitutionality of the law, but never heard a definite yea or nay.

Spent too much time in the state while in a former profession, and this one tickled a memory.

Well I'm also just starting out persay....so I haven't spent that much money.
I own a riding crop that I got for about $7 at a horse show-leather, decent quality...I have 2 nice paddles that I got for free one oak, one cherrywood I believe...I have a set of nipple clamps that I just got recently those are fun, I have a set of police issue handcuffs and a set of 'fuzzy' cuffs, and various other sex toys...I'd say I've spent between 1 and 2 hundred dollars thus far...
