Don't you have to pay health insurance companies many thousands of dollars before they activate your insurance? Don't they give you this down payment back a few months later?

It's called a waiting period. And they don't have to do anything they don't want to do. And you still have to pay...

But it feels soooo good when you meet your out-of-pocket expenses and they owe the rest. It's almost worth getting sick!

To give you back an intelligent answer you need to be more specific in your question. Isit An indemnity ins, private, Medicare/Medicaid, supplemental that you ask about? Sometimes rules are employer specific or driven by therapy specific rules too. ...... Get my drift?
I had golden handcuffs for 10 years. Health system sponsored health ins. No deductible, no copays. Now I'm in the real world and I cry when I look at my deductibles! :D

We chose a high deductable insurance last year and have stuck with it. The payments are less and we are expected to pay the first 3100 before the insurance kicks in but my h's company puts 1000 up towards that. Our daughter is tube-fed and he supplies and formula cover that deductible in a couple of months (1500 a month for her tubing, supplies and Pediasure) then it is 90/10. Once another 6900 is paid out, we are covered 100 percent.

It really works excellent for our particular family.

What kind do you have?

Dunno, I live in a civilised country with a National Health Service.

You have to know calculus to figure this out.
Sorry Mike.

So you have to pay them many thousands of dollars before they activate your insurance?

What is this called?

It's called Fucking Over the Middle Class.

Insurance companies never pay what they owe. Never.

Check out a doctor's bill very carefully, you will see that they have charged more but the insurance copy invents their own price and the doctor's forgive the rest because they know they aren't ever going to get the money.

And as for consumers, god forbid you should actually get sick . They will fight you every step of the way, even if you are dying. Everything is a challenge.

And THIS is the best health care system in the world. This is what those guys who howl about Obamacare, this is the system they want to save.

Uhmm Funky, get over it.

You know as well as I do that Health insurance is like auto insurance.

They insure you NOT to get in an accident, or not to get sick.

If you violate this trust, you're fucked.

Why should I "get over it" when I think it's a bad idea and is literally harming people?

I don't believe that our physical health should be treated in the same way we treat cars.

Why is this such a radical idea to you?

Health insurance companies don't give a flying fuck about your health, they just want to gouge your wallet and give that money to their greedy investors.

When you get sick, they will fight you every step of the way.

Nobody answered this question.

Do you really have to pay an insurance company thousands of dollars before they activate your insurance?

How much is it? $5,000? 10,000? $15,000?

What you are asking about is called a "deductible." It depends on the insurance plan. I've heard of as low as $500 and as high as $5000. This isn't money you pay the insurance company, it is money you pay out of pocket towards your own health care bills.

We chose a high-deductible ins, there are regular plans too they just cost more monthly. It works for us because our daughter takes care of the high deductible in a couple of months.

First of all you could and should be asking an insurance company. But since you obviously aren't, because, well this is the GB. . .

You will pay premiums to an insurance company monthly. It will depend upon your coverages as to the deductible you choose, and the percentage paid provisions you choose. But lets say you choose an 80/20 policy with a 750$ deductible and a maximum out of pocket of 3000$. For this policy, you will pay a premium of 480$ per month if you are only covering yourself. The 480 is paid to the company to provide you the insurance and does not go towards your medical expenses. that's just the insurance company's fee.

Under this plan, each year, you pay the first 750$ of expenses once that amount is met, the company will pay 80 percent of your expenses. you will pay 20 percent until you have paid 3000$ then the company will pay the rest. for that year. Each year this begins again.

If this is through your employer, they may split the 480 $ cost with you. (most do) But under the new laws I don't think there is a waiting period for coverage to begin. That is a question for the employer or the insurance carrier.

Pre-existing conditions will probably have a waiting period, but that only for THAT condition. Pre-existing conditions would be illness that were diagnosed prior to your insurance coverage.

this is the simplified version but I hope it helps.

Paying too much for health insurance! Don't see THAT going down any time soon
