How much energy we must waste...

by following the sounds from our TV stereo equipment.

The doorbell rings and I'm halfway there when I realise it's from a TV movie.

Same with the telephone.

I hear a sound in the corner of the room and, startled, look in that direction. Again a small noise on TV.

But the ultimate happened yesterday. As the film started I put a meal in the microwave to heat up.

A few moments later came the familiar "Ping".

I went to the microwave, which was still going through the heating process, turned it off and took out the meal before I realised my mistake.

So I'm not only following false sounds around the house I'm now conditioned to carrying out certain actions by those very sounds!
