how much DO you know about computers?

I have e6 and xp, I have firewall defender avg anti spy, i have this weird problem my computer will siddenly just shut its self down.

it has no viruses or any other problem is it over heating or is it just memory loss.

I clean my files and defrag every two days. 758 of ram, I intend to go to !giga bite soon should I add more hard drive?

defragging every 2 days is pointless, and my husband had the same problem. the actual problem was the ram. with 768 i'm assuming you have a 512 and 256 stick in your comp, so try swapping the positions that they are in, in the motherboard, or removing one and seeing how stable it is, because chances are, one of your sticks is going bad, or you've got two different speeds that are not compatible (e.g. 266 mhz stick mixed with a 333 mhz stick, and your motherboard can't handle it, although some can)

I usualy defrg daily
but I seem to play musical files a lot and I end up with a few thousand fragments a day as stated by Perfect disk 8

and I agree on the ram, try to stick to the same size, brand and timing with your ram

also try cleaning the leads with some 99% iso and a cotton bud

If you're defragging daily, perhaps you should look into storing your information on a better filesystem... defragging daily is pretty useless unless you're constantly moving huge amounts of data, and even then - get a better filesystem... :p
give me UFS, ReiserFS, ZFS drivers for windows XP and sure

till then I'm stuck with NTFS because of my need to use XP for school

somehow booting creates about 600 excess fragments

plus I usually just hit defrag when I'm at school taking notes, not doing any IO there really, aside from grabbing things from MSDN like Vista :)

I think buzsaw helps a lot.

where did expert come from?

if it was spawned from my say I know most of the tricks and such, I guess I didnt qualify that properly. As in for any and all daily work I do, though thats starting to include DNS and Terminal services... - thats an other story though

I do agree, unless you're a professional student theres no real experts, because theres such a huge spectrum of things
hardware, software
OS
integration
migration
services
protocols...

Certs I've noticed really mean nothing more than increased wages, chances are I could walk in right now and get my MCSE in XP and Sever2k3
give me two weeks and I could most likly pass my CCNA Exam'
I could possibly pass one or two of the Sun and Linux exams now

so they really mean nothing at all other than you put in the effort for a time and got a piece of paper and maybe a card

I agree with you. I started on Windows, then DG UNIX and onto Sun Solaris. Got plenty of paper (certs) and enjoyed the work but the classes were the basics. I took that and learned "real life" on the job. In 2001 I got laid off from an ASP I landed at a reseller. They thought I was some kind of genius. I have since stayed with selling but I don't get the hands on that I used to and sometimes I miss that. I do get to design now and I put together some complicated solutions that have worked out very well. I guess in the end you have to enjoy it and make money. I do my best to stay up to date but more as a design architect. I can't keep up with everything thats out there.

I grew up with them.... My dad purchased a TRS80 Model 1 in '78 when the 8080 or Z80 processor was new. I grew up learning the TRS80 DOS with a tape drive!!!! I remember helping my dad build a external 5.25" floppy drive interface circuit, Quite the upgrade from the ole tape drive. After that it was a COCO computer (C64 knock off) Then the 1st 8088 Intel Processor.... e

1st Hayes 300 Baud Modem. Still have the receipt $500

1st optical mouse that used a reflective pad with a grid. I think it was a MS mouse (not Microsoft)

So I have had a history of hardware through the years. Most of it is hands on getting dirty figuring out how stuff works. Meters, o-scopes are tools of the trade.

With My job I know a bit of Unix just because I have to.

Teaching myself Assembly to help me further understand the architecture of the processor.
