Misandry and misogyny are a two headed hydra. Feminists and non-feminists argue endlessly over which one was first, but in this day and age it's irrelevant. That's because if you only sever one head, the other head will make it sprout right back. What is relevant is that you have to chop off both heads at once, to kill the beast we call 'sexism'.
Enter, Mercedes Carrera.
Mercedes Carrera is a porn star who has recently formed a charity for Cytherea, another porn star who recently fell victim to a home invasion robbery and rape at the hands of 3 thugs. Mercedes Carrera is also a member of the Gamergate movement, a group of feminists and non-feminists who have taken up the fight against corruption in game journalism - and, as a result, against the radical feminists who defend and benefit from this corruption. In response to Carrera's membership in Gamergate, radical feminist extremists like Arthur Chu have viciously attacked her for going to bat for Cytherea, attacking her for being a Gamergate member.
Mercedes Carrera has, unwittingly or not, put herself in between both heads of the terrible sexism hydra, with her greatsword in hand. She finds herself advocating for a victim of a brutal rape and for a woman whose profession makes her the target of misogynist ridicule and derision. Anyone who has watched the porn industry long enough (say, a day) has seen the lack of respect that people have for porn stars: it's almost identical to and definitely as ignorant as the disdain both men and women have for prostitutes. (While at the same time most men give high-fives to male porn stars - well, most of those who aren't outright jealous.) She also finds herself at odds with radical feminists like Arthur Chu, and also she finds herself facing complete APATHY from mainstream feminists that she appealed to for money to aid Cytherea - feminists who, unlike Gamergate, ignored her completely. Thus, by proxy, Gamergate ALSO finds itself optimally positioned to at least wound both heads of the sexism hydra.
Only history can tell whether she is going to realize where she stands and whether she's going to take swing that blade righteously. Most certainly, she will not kill the beast even if she does realize the importance of the stance she has taken.
That's where the rest of us come in.
Mercedes Carrera has legitimized something that should have been part of our creed a long time ago: the absolute snarling contempt for those who talk about porn stars like they're dirty, lesser, or of loose (or otherwise inferior) morals. This is (collectively speaking, not individually speaking) our chance to make up for lost time and vocalize what we should have always spoken up about: porn stars are people, too, and as working class people they deserve the same respect as any other type of entertainer. How are we also fighting misandry at the same time? Well, misogyny does breed misandry. And we have already long been at war against misandry on many fronts. Our swords already swing routinely at one head, this means we'll be chopping at both heads of the hydra, and unlike feminists we'll be doing a thorough and complete job of killing the sexist beast.
Let's help Mercedes Carrera take another huge bite out of sexism.
