How many times has this been done?

Everything has been done. We all know that. Somehow we try to do things a bit different and add our own twists. But if it's been done too many times, there aren't very many variations left.

I'm considering something where the family business is in trouble and the whole family chips in to help, it a Lit sort of way. Couple of 20-ish daughters and a son, Mom, maybe others.

Has it been done more than 10,000 times?

I published something last spring that was tangentially related. In "Working for Mom," Mom has a business plan, and Son agrees to help her.

I couldn't even guess how many similar stories there might be.

That's such a broad premise, though. It could encompass so many radically different types of stories...

Mom's a dentist, works out of a strip mall. Some local thug breaks in to steal drugs and roughs her up, breaking one of her hands. Dad calls the kids, and they all take a leave of absence to come home and lend a hand. Youngest daughter is Delta Force, son's an army Ranger, oldest daughter is NATO pararescue...they unleash hell on local organized crime as a family.

Dad runs a bordello, but a change in tax laws forces a lot of his "working girls" to seek alternate employment. The college-age kids come home and lend a hand, or mouth, or whatever orifice the clients demand...even Mom gets in on the act.

The family owns a farm, and the kids come home when they find out Dad's dying of cancer. All of the kids could not wait to get out of "that hick town" but now that they have been away, they come to appreciate what they really had as a family and a community. Each of the kids rekindles an old romance that they never thought would amount to anything.

All of those stories would fall under your premise, but I don't think any of them have been done before.

I wouldn't worry about it. You probably won't get an answer. There may be stories out there with similar ideas that you will never know about. Focus on making your twist on this premise as good and as original as you can, and nobody will ever care whether there are other stories with some similarities.

Not sure about the son, but maybe.

There may be stories out there with similar ideas that you will never know about. Focus on making your twist on this premise as good and as original as you can, and nobody will ever care whether there are other stories with some similarities.

This would have elements of I/T, E/V, maybe Group. Just not sure of it all yet.

I've come to the conclusion that If I think of it....many before have and many after me will.

Who cares? Write the story. Make it your own. You tell a good story with characters the reader cares about, that is all that really matters.

There are a lot of stories that use the same or similar jumping off point. It is the characters you create and the direction you take them from the starting point that makes the difference.

Think about this, how many stories here start with two people meeting at a place of employment? Be it girl/girl, girl/boy or boy/boy.

Just write what to you is the best story you can and share it when you are ready.

No doubt. But there isn't a reader who has read all ten thousand stories. The vast majority of them probably wouldn't have come across more than a dozen or two. And for a few, this may be the first story of this sort that any of them have ever read, and they're virgins to it. So be kind to these virgins, do the best you can do to please them, and make it a little different, in your own style.They'll love it!

There are still many things you can do with the basic idea. What is this place of employment like, what roles do the characters have there, what do they think of working there?

I had a guy and a girl meet at a streetcar museum. I based it entirely on a real museum in Connecticut. He was a volunteer there and she was a visitor. I think that was enough to say: probably it hasn't been done like this before.
