When you are writing a scene, how many positions do you like to have?

As I'm writing, I'm finding that I really don't want to write the typical lick, suck fuck format, and am favoring to a single position or two where it makes sense for the scene.

I'm really wanting to write stories where there is sex, and for there to be some truthiness to them.

And I know that write how you want is going to be a response, I'm curious how other writers feel about it.

It really depends on the story. No author should feel compelled to write his or her story like it's a porn video, with the usual progressions. Most of the time, though, I like to write a sex scene as something that is building to a climax/crescendo, so there is often some degree of progression of activities up to the point of intercourse. I sometimes ask myself, what would I like to DO if I were one of the characters in this situation?

Interesting Q.

Thinking on it, for standard couple sex, I usually max out at 2. One for establishment, possibly to suggest mood or how into each other/long it's been. Second is just for a transition and maybe to show a little steam has been released (if they were feral before)

In RL, novelty and transitioning into/out of partners preferred positions is more of a thing to keep orgasms restrained or building. I mostly don't futz with those realities other than newish lovers/couples or exploring sexual disfunction (either known or subconsciously accepted as "just the way it is" by the couple)

The full buffet of sexual position approach rarely works for me. Nothing is particularly novel if you've read much erotica and don't have a favorite position you need to see.

I don't know. Does sucking yoghurt off a domme's toes count as a position?

People are going to say it depends on the story, but...it really does kind of depend on the story.

For a first time virginity story, I'd stick to one (with maybe some minor shifting around before getting it right.)
For the story I'm about to write on the set of a porn studio - er - all of them?

But assuming it's two people who are ending a romantic evening with some vanilla sex and both know what they are doing? I'd probably still keep it fairly low. Foreplay (including BJ) for him. Foreplay for her. One or possibly two positons. Post-coital cuddle and 'same-time-next-week' ending.

I don't think I've ever thought about that before.

I just write to the moment and it's mood.

Rather than taking from porn, take from experience. So I like to throw in something awkward or silly, the moment and it's action, and maybe the 'well now what' afterwards.

In the one or two unpublished stories of mine with a 'professional' in a sex scene, I've put in some internal monologue that's detached from the events if it's a non-emotional 'work like' moment.

It totally depends. For quasi-autobiographical stuff I sometimes combine things from different occasions to make it more full on for the average stroker reader. In my most fully autobiographical work, I stuck to one position. In made up stuff, it depends how realistic I’m trying to be. I change position when fucking, but not to the extent that would happen in a porn flick (or some of my stories).

I often have characters circling around each other because they're not ready to get into bed yet, but when they do, it tends to be a couple of positions.
Your writing is so detailed. You draw the reader into the story, the moods and emotions of the characters. I could almost smell the sex ;->

Now I’m picturing two wrestlers squaring off.

As for number of positions… it’s totally specific to the encounter.

The most enthusiastic position changers I’ve been with were poly-queers - everything for everyone.

The most fluid I’ve seen for positions was watching two girlfriends, I couldn’t really say they settled on one position for more than a few seconds.

The most sedentary partner for me was a high-maintenance woman. She wanted to lay there and not mess up her hair or makeup while I did all the work.

🤷‍♀️

If the MMC is young and prone to blow too quickly, one could easily imagine three or four. An old duffer might be lucky to finish one. For females, as many as it takes until she gets a bit too sore.

As many as they end up getting into.
I never map out a sex scene, I focus on the getting there, and once its starts I just let it go where it goes.
I know there are people who do outline or plot the sex, but for me, the thought of "Okay, first they start, then they'll move to, then she's going to go down on him, then this position, she sits on his face....it really takes the spontaneity out of it

That, much like life- fucking in real life, too, is a mirad of variables. A quickie, moves from one room to another, drunk, in the shower? I don't really think about how many positions as much as I think about how I'm going to describe them, and make them humanly possible to do, nor am I, or my characters up for the challenge of trying do all the kama sutra in one go.

Depends on the scene.

I had a sex-scene in part 4 of ALL THE DEVILS ARE HERE, that was just two people, turned on and into each other having standard sex, but the emotional weight of the scene meant that, although it was probably quite vanilla, it was still really enjoyable to read and edit.

Sometime spectacle is king, sometimes story, sometimes both.

Well, if I'm writing, I need to keep at least one hand at the keyboard, so sometimes lying on my back while she's in cowgirl can work pretty well. But if my wife is also writing, AND she doesn't mind my laptop resting on the small of her back, we can both multitask while in doggy...oh, have I misunderstood the question?

I'm another depends-on-the-story type, but I can suggest a detail point: If two characters have never had sex with each other before, it'd be reasonable for them to try out a few positions, whether they intended to or not. Even in the throes of actinic passion, new lovers will surely go through moments of no-not-there, and can-you-lift-that-leg, and please-get-your-elbow off-my-hair.

I have my characters use one position during any sex scene. If there's a repeat, I'll have them use another. As far as more than one position in any given scene, no. That starts to get too much like a porn film where the participants switch positions about every two minutes. I don't think real people really change positions during sex, and in fact, most couples who've been together for a while have a favorite position with which they're comfortable and with which they know what to expect from each other. They might change positions sometimes, but it's usually the same one.

I'd also add that none of my characters are into the athletic positions you see in some porn films. The "ostrich tail" position quickly becomes painful for the woman unless she's extremely flexible. Unless she's in pretty good physical shape, even the cowgirl and reverse cowgirl positions will quickly tire a woman unless her goal is to make the guy come as fast as possible. People have sex to feel good, not to suffer from muscle aches the next day, not to say I haven't had that experience a time or twl.

I've used various sex positions in my stories, but I like to tell why the MCs are using that particular position at that particular time. Is it the novelty? Is it some physical reason? Is one partner testing the other's limits?

In any sex situation in real life, we're always having that dialog with our partners. Without it, it's just a porn movie with the actors going through the usual gamut of possibilities.

Illustrated kama sutra position charts can be found on the Internet. I use them.

Depends on the story. If a horny 20 year old male is in the story, it will take several O’s to calm him down enough so the partner can get something out of the session. In that case, multiple positions are reasonable.
With older, creakier participants, just once on a given session is perfectly reasonable.
