How long does pending usually take?

Is there a notification, such as an email, when it has been approved or denied? I submitted my first story today.

Check your Control Panel in a week. Your first story will take a while, since the site will check it more closely for content compliance. DON'T touch it while it's Pending, or you'll just send it to the back of the queue. The only notification is on your Control Panel.

No notification, you need to look at your control panel and see if the status has changed.

If you inadvertently pulled it back to Draft, then yes.

Check your story's current status, and in future leave it alone! Edit properly the first time, before you submit, not after.
