Just received this. Didn't think it was funny so I didn't put it on the humor thread. Draw your own conclusions.

How Gubmint Works

Once upon a time the government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of
a desert. Congress said, "Someone may steal from it at night." So
they created a night watchman position and hired a person for the job.

Then Congress said, "How does the watchman do his job without
instruction?" So they created a planning department and hired two
people, one person to write the instructions, and one person to do
time studies.

Then Congress said, "How will we know the night watchman is doing the
tasks correctly?" So they created a Quality Control department and
hired two people. One to do the studies and one to write the reports.

Then Congress said, "How are these people going to get paid?" So They
created the following positions, a time keeper, and a payroll officer,
Then hired two people.

Then Congress said, "Who will be accountable for all of these people?"
So they created an administrative section and hired three people, an
Administrative Officer, Assistant Administrative Officer, and a Legal
Secretary.

Then Congress said, "We have had this command in operation for one
Year and we are $18,000 over budget, we must cutback overall cost."

So they laid off the night watchman.

NOW slowly.

Let it sink in.

Quietly, we go like sheep to slaughter.

Does anybody remember the reason given for the establishment of
the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY .... During the Carter Administration?

Anybody?

Anything?

No?

Didn't think so!

Bottom line. We've spent several hundred billion dollars in support of
an agency ...
the reason for which not one person who reads this can remember!

Ready??
It was very simple ... and at the time, everybody thought it very appropriate.

The Department of Energy was instituted on 8-04-1977.
TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL.

Hey, pretty efficient, huh???

AND NOW, IT'S 2009 -- 32 YEARS LATER -- AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS
"NECESSARY" DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR. THEY HAVE 16,000
FEDERAL EMPLOYEES AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES; AND
LOOK AT THE JOB THEY HAVE DONE! THIS IS WHERE YOU SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD
AND SAY, "WHAT WAS I THINKING?"

Ah, yes -- good ole bureaucracy.

AND, NOW, WE ARE GOING TO TURN THE BANKING SYSTEM, HEALTH CARE AND THE AUTO INDUSTRY OVER TO THE SAME GOVERNMENT?
:eek::eek::eek:

Point well made, DG, I had to smile...ain't it the truth though?

:)

This is the best argument yet for keep Govt. out of everything except governing. And that should be limited!

Oh wait, if anyone read the Constitution, it is!

Reading this is like watching your mother-in-law drive off a cliff in your new car...you don't know whether to laugh or cry. :D

The government that governs best, governs least.

How true, on both counts :D

This isn't a real story, you know. Someone made it up. Someone who thinks "gubmint" is clever.

The Department of Energy was instituted on 8-04-1977.
TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL.
And it might have done just that...if the people hadn't elected presidents with ties to oil and friends in oil who had no reason to want it to work.

It's interesting you know, but medial insurance companies spend 30% of their budget on bureaucracy. Meanwhile, Medicare spends...3%. Yes. 3%.

So next time someone sends you--or posts--a quaint little story mocking government bureaucracy, with the implication that government is wasteful and inefficient...try to remember that it's spending way less money on bureaucracy than most companies that have to make money and answer to stockholders.

Fables can backfire is they come across as propaganda rather than truth.

Yawn! Same old same old. 'Government is evuhl!'

Government is a tool. It is no more good or evil than a shovel. It does only what its users direct it to do.

And that's us, folks.

If you hate government so much, go some place where there's minimal government. I hear Somalia is nice this time of year.

Actually, I'd wait til December and monsoon season. It's hot as fuck right now.

Must be interesting to be so naive that you get all your "news" from email forwards...the intellectual equivalent of chain letters.

Here's the first paragraph from the DOE Office of Science. I have no idea what percentage of the DOE is comprised by this office, but the fact that they're funding research into energy technology gives me the impression this is something we should be supporting - unless we wish to hand the baton to China and let them become the dominant force in new technology.

ABOUT THE OFFICE OF SCIENCE

The Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States, providing more than 40 percent of total funding for this vital area of national importance. It oversees – and is the principal federal funding agency of – the Nation’s research programs in high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and fusion energy sciences.

Christ! Don't you people recognize satire when you see it? It's a joke, a parody, an object lesson if you will. Quit being so touchy about every fucking thing that's posted you don't agree with. Being snarky and acting so damn superior won't change anyone's opinion and makes you look like the small-minded, ideologues that you are.

Just chill, respect someone else's opinion and stop trying to be the smartest kid in class. ;)

The only "object lesson" I gleaned from the posted "joke" was the fact that many people around here are severely knowledge-deprived (which is a known cause of small-mindedness.) If you're offended by knowledge, TE999, perhaps you should try to remedy that situation by absorbing some facts, rather than lashing out at those who wish to help you in that endeavor.

When an opinion is presented in a factual context, (as the piece in question was presented) it is open to rebuttal. If you would be more comfortable having your opinions validated, rather than challenged, perhaps you should consider posting at the Fox News website, where facts are not only optional, they're virtually nonexistent.

Yep! get most of my knowledge from e-mail. Oh, also from reading these threads. I get the best from both sides where eveyone seems to know everything. It keeps me from watching one sided news programs on TV.

Oh to make matters even better, I like Glenn Beck. I learn a lot from him too.
Have a good day.

Even when that opinion is one that is detrimental to the health of the nation? When the idea behind 'the satire' is a simple minded as anything a Marxist would come up with?

To say that 'Government never works and never did' is just like 'Business never worked and never did.' It's not a statement of fact. It's an ideology. An ideology is always a way of simplifying a person's view of the world.

And they're always wrong.

Wow! I didn't know we had so many people on the A/H that worked for the government, or at least get paid by them. I pay taxes, that gives me the right to use humor if I so choose.

As long as I can remember, we have always complained about the way government operates. Because Obama is in there doesn't change our right to complain.

I've been on the A/H since 2005. The people who are complaining about negative posts were the same ones doing the complaining the last 4 years.
Kind of ironic isn't it!

What's ironic is that the people rallying against big government and cherishing a stringent intepretation of the constitution was curiously silent in doing so until januray this year. When they all of a sudden popped out of the woodworks with their minimalistic , constitutionalistic message. Be it in humor form or in serious debate form.

Which tells me, it's not anti goverment, it's anti Democrats.

Which is ok. Partisan opposition, debate and satire is an important part of a free society.

I just wished y'all would have the balls to admit it.

Government exists for one purpose, to spend other people's money.

However you slice & dice it, it does nothing else but take other people's money and spend it.

LIAR, youre full of shit again! George Bush was as bad as any Democrat about stealing money that didnt belong to him, and spending it.

And Lo! My point is illustrated most effectively. Thanks, fellas. :D

Fuck guys lighten up. I'm sure that there are among you people who have actually worked for the Government. I spent 7 years, Army and Civil Service.

"Taken a piss at the Guberment", is an American right. Christ this ain't Iran!

I understand the positions you all took but I just don't really give a shit.;)

Sorry if that sounded harsh. :D

Liar, I agree with you quite often. I for one voted Democate in the primaries and a split ticket in the general election. I'm 64 and have never voted a straight ticket.

Throughout my life I have belonged to five different unions, all of whom wanted to tell me who to vote for.

I try to vote my conscious and my wallet. I want to be the one to choose whom I give my money too, and those I might want to help. I figure I can do it better than giving it to people who will spend it for me.

If there are people you feel need help out there than reach in your wallet and give to them and have your family and friends give also. If you choose not to help anyone, that should be your choice also.

I'm so tired of taking from the working guy who's trying to survive himself. Well, you have my nickle's worth, due to inflation.
DG (by the way, sometimes I have a hard time believing a person who calls himself LIAR) just doen't seem right,:)

So, you make the point I just made, and say that I'm full of shit for making it? Dude, you need to learn how to read.

Oh well, your non sequitir Tourette's is a least a bit of comic relief.

My version is elegant, your's is common. I prefer to think I'm the master of words, not their slave.
