How do you write yours?

I do my best writing while driving. I try to work the entire story out in my head with the radio off.
I do that too. The drive to work I get the story played out in my head. But to just sit down and start writing, it seems that 10-11 a.m. is "my zone". Must be a bio-rythmn thing.

Yikes! I am a computer snob. No handwriting for me. I compose at the keyboard. Until then, the ideas just stay in that dark password-protected attic room.

I actually have a phobia about pencils. I didn't figure it out until about ten years ago. I almost failed out of high school because I hated doing my homework (but then I'd ace all the tests and pass by the skin of my teeth). I went back to college ten years after and all the sudden didn't mind homework (because of being able to type it) and got A's and B's.

Writing with a pencil (or marker) is like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. I have to write everything with a pen (which is bad because my handwriting sucks). The older I get, the worse i bothers me. Luckily I type about 100 wpm, so writing stories was a lot easier than I thought (although I need a new keyboard . . . this f@$%ing thing has two dead keys and it's driving me nuts to go back and retype all my t's and h's constantly).

Okay.. so.

I write constantly. Even when I'm not writing, even when I'm so depressed I can't write, somewhere in my head is a scribe hard at work. I'll write while driving, while showering, while riding, while sleeping, while eating.

My husband finally realized how ingrained this is in me this past week- I carried a notebook everywhere, wore out seventeen pens, ran out of paper and hjad to dart into a pharmacy and buy ANOTHER notebook, and still managed to take pictures, go hiking, eat, walk what must have been fifty miles over the course of the week, watch a couple movies, navigate him through Massachusetts highways (and get us lost in NH, it should be illegal to have two Salem's that close to each other without specifying- Witch Salem is that way, other Salem is thatta way.) yadda yadda yadda...

I will write with a crayon on window glass if I have to grab something before I lose it and that's all that's available. I lose things very quickly... they flash through my head and are gone an hour later.

The best way for me to write is to put me in a situation I'm comfortable in (any of them will do) and hand me a keyboard, a pen and paper, or a tape recorder. (I can transcript off a tape if I have to.) I can write impromptu requests (no guarantee of quality) or something that sparks off of something I saw or heard. I prefer to have music going or to have someone to talk to while I write. Yes, I can do both at once. Apparently, Abs and I both work better while multi-tasking.

*shrugs* Basically, I just write. No real how to it.
