How do you RP?

I am not very experienced at RP, can anyone give me some tips, shorthand, conventions?
And ideas on how to make it very exciting?

-keep genuine feeling in it even though it's "fantasy"
-allow your level of detail to vary; observe the level of detail your partner reaches
-understand that chemistry is something out of our control and doesn't reflect your capability to roleplay directly
