how do you post with gifs and jpgs?

I know I am a newbie and totally clueless when it comes to the gif and jpg thing.
If anyone could take the time to fill me in I would really appreciate it.

It really is easy. It's just defining the terms that makes it seem complicated. All of the words required to explain that "<a_valid_URL_for_a_picture>" variable in the middle take up lots of space.
