No, it's a Navy thing. I am fairly sure the American Navy did this too.
Apparently, the salt helps release the volatile oils from the beans..... all I know is, my coffee is stronger if I brew with a pinch of salt, and it makes the caffeine hit better.

Ok. Ive had it once. 2 different kinds. One was ok and the other was really bad.

I use sea salt, and only a 'scant pinch' (take a pinch of salt and then drop that amount by 2/3).
