I'm a little obsessed with balancing my various identities. I recently watched this special on Jewish Americans, and I kind of related to the way the playwright Tony Kushner expressed it - I mean, you kind of had to watch it to get his crazy energy, because he was half laughing, half shouting: I'm GAY. I'm a JEW. I'm an artist - I'm a Jewish artist. I'm a gay Jewish artist. I'm an artistic Jewish Gay man...Who the hell knows what comes first.

I don't know what the order is, but I am:

It's different when your outside appearance isn't always indicative of what you are. I'm Jewish, but I don't look Jewish at all, in the way most Americans think.

Actually, I'm really interested in the sort of secret outsider point of view. It's something that I keep coming back to in my life. First and foremost as a Jew, and now, as a kinky person. It's a bit funny, but it does come up. At our local group meeting place, the waitstaff always tries to seat me, and then I have to tell them, no, really, I'm going upstairs to that group. And then I've been in mixed company, and vanilla people have taken me in confidence and asked, what do you think of so-and-so's piercings? How are you friends with him? Kind of funny.
