How do you feel about apple crisp?

We've discussed a lot of issues here at Lit. over the years, and I think it's time to finally explore this hot topic. So how about it?

Personally, I'm pro-apple crisp. When the topping comes out just perfect, and you've got a good sugar-to-cinnamon ratio, that's what it's all about. I could live off the stuff. Well, until all that sugar made my kidneys explode.

Good stuff. Apple crisp all the way. That's my stance, and I'm sticking with it.

I like apple crisp. But I love peach cobbler more.

I think the whole cobbler family doesn't get the attention it deserves. Whoever invented the stuff was a genius. It's got all your basic pie elements without making a mess of your cutting board by rolling out the pie shell. Brilliant.

Cherry cobbler owns me. It's true.

You people are all sick in the head.

Pass the peach cobbler.

*tummy grumble*

You shouldn't have disrespected the crisp, Rose. DENIED! :p

Damnit, bitch!

Give me some cobbler or ...Or I'll... Umm...

*cries like a baby*

I'm all doped up and you're taking advantage of me!

*waaaaahhh*

*wimper*

*pout*

I think apple crisp is divine. I especially love it when the cook uses both Granny Smith apples for tartness and Fuji apples for sweetness. It brings about the perfect balance of apple-y goodness. And I like it best when I'm eating it with someone who hates the edge pieces, because they are my favorite.

superlittlegirl, you've given me great ideas for culinary experimentation. Thank you! And happy birthday. ;)

Rose: Well, duh. I'm evil!

Is it really true that sugar will make your kidneys explode?

I don't know if they'd explode, but if I eat too much sugar, they hurt so bad I feel like I've been kicked by a mule. Thankfully, Splenda can replace sugar for just about every recipe I have, and I can't taste the difference. Woo hoo! :D

I've never tasted Splenda. Does it come in liquid or granular form? I guess what I'm asking is, do you have to make special adjustments when substituting it for sugar to achieve consistent results? I'm totally addicted to sugar, and it worries me a lot. I would like to try reducing my consumption, but I just can't get used to nutrasweet and the like. If Splenda is fairly close to the flavor of the real thing, I might have to give it a whirl.

apple crisp

Apple crisp while it's still warm with real whipped cream on it, melting all over! OMG - yummy!

Splenda

I buy it in a box, granular. The cooking conversion is 1:1 -- i.e. if you use one cup of sugar, you'd use one cup of Splenda. One thing I've noticed about it is that it's very light. Don't be discouraged by how light the box is: it really does go a long way.

Mr. Naudiz claims he can taste the difference. I can't. The only problem I've heard about using Splenda for cooking involves getting it to thicken in water or something, for glazing. I don't glaze very often, so it hasn't been a problem for me. For normal baking, though, it works just fine. I've even used it instead of confectioner's sugar for making cake icing.

Who in their right mind hates the end pieces? Birthday girl, you're living in a dream world!

I like my crisp topping with walnuts added to the oatmeal mixture. Crispy buttery nutty goodness!

Naudiz, you sick torturous bitch - I'm out of ingredients

My best friend hates the end pieces. Whenever I bake lasagna or impossible pie or magic cookie bars or anything that has edge pieces, I let her cut the very first piece out of the exact middle. It's something she was never allowed to do as a child, so I love to indulge her. And when I was a kid, I had to fight my mom for the edge pieces, so she lets me have the edges. We make the perfect duo for eating baked goods, because we like the thing that the other doesn't. I do live in a dream world, but it is a very happy dream.

Strangely enough, I don't like the edge pieces on cakes, though. Too much frosting for me. I like the middles of cakes the very best. Especially chocolate cake.

I think chocolate cake should have crisp topping, instead of big gobs of frosting. But I'd make the crisp topping out of crushed chocolate cookies and butter, instead of oatmeal and cinnamon and walnuts and stuff.

Hmm, I've got all the ingredients in the house, I'm going to have to make some today! I love the stuff Naudiz, right on girl.

It needs to be on top of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate effect though, I'll have to go get some.

I reccommend apple cider as a substitute for the water in the apple crisp- more flavorful.

Breakfast...

I was already hungry, and now I'm just starving. Time to run to the store and get me some apples to make an apple crisp. I haven't had any in ages. Just thinking of the soft apples and the crispy toping.... Mmmmmmmm...

Damn it, where are my car keys... I need to get me some apples...

Hey, where you been girl? You don't come over for coffee, you don't return my phone calls. What's up wit dat?
