How do these things happen?

We had to take my 11yr old to the doctor today. Somehow in less than two weeks, the back of her ear ring grew into her ear lobe. She had no pain, it is not a new peircing.

Two weeks ago she had her ear rings out for a basketball game, and everything was fine.
Last night she tried to take them out again for another basketball game and the back was completly inside her earlobe. There was just a hard lump. No infection or cuts or anything.

I don't understand how that happened. The doctor was able to get it out and put her on anti-biotics to ward off a secondary staff infection. But I am still wondering how this happened.

OUCH!!

i actually have heard of that happening before. it is sometimes caused by putting the backing on too hard and the skin just grows over top of it.
i have hoops in mine. i used the other ones with the backings and i have put them on too tight before. i had to get help to get them off.

glad she is fine now.

At age 11 she's still growing.

I suspect that she put the back on too tight and it irritated the earlobe just as she had a growth spurt, causing the irritation to "heal" over the backing.

As the skin heals from the initial and any subsequent piercings, the tendency would be for the tissue to continue to grow and overlap, until the backing becomes incased.

Have her take her earings out daily and cleans the site with peroxide, and then place the rings back in. do this at least once daily and it should ward off any further problems.

If any redness or swelling occurs remove the posts and call the doctor. As you said this could indicate an infection....this is caused most often by two bugs: Staphylcoccus aureous
Staphylcoccus epidermis

hope this helps! love the new av;)

One of the munchykins announced she lost her earring back whilst at a friend's house. They put in a spare and let her go back to playing. A week later I noticed the lobe was pink...removed the back to clean and found the same thing had happened. The back had been on too tight the skin had closed over it (the first earring back which wasn't actually lost). I checked at work with one of our plastics guys and he assurede me it's not uncommon. No infection occured.

I suggest benzalkonium chloride solution for a no-sting disninfectant.

Thank you all, I am glad to know this isn't unique for us.

You can't even tell anything was wrong with her, unless she is trying to be dramatic  that little drama queen lol

"Why did that happen?", you ask.
It's God's way of telling you that earrings are unnatural and that your child shouldn't be tampering with her body in such a way. You must repent and show your devotion to The Lord by removing those obscene pieces of metal.

Then I would have to take the ones out of my ears too.
