How do I get my story to be viewable?

Let me first start by apologizing if i posted this in the wrong area, as I am new to the boards.

I recently finished polishing up a story for submission, submitted it and it still is "pending". I am just curious as to what that means, and as to how long these "pending" stories usually take to make it through.

Mine took 6 days.

It depends on what format you submitted your story in. If you copy/pasted it in the text box (which would make it .txt) then it's automatically processed by a bot first, then viewed by a person. It usually takes two days. My boyfriend just posted three at once and it only took two days.

If you submit it in another format (.doc or .rtf) then it has to be converted manually by a person and then posted. That takes considerably longer. Usually 3-4 days, depending on how many you submit at a time.

And welcome, by the way. I hope that helped.

It depends, but usually 3 -7 days.
If there are a lot of stories in the queue it will take longer, as they like to have about the same number of stories come out each day.
If you're a new writer here it tends to take longer than established writers.
If there is a themed contest going on (there isn't right now) any stories for the contest get fast tracked ahead of all others. Contest entries usually go up next day and sometimes within hours of submission.
Poems also usually go up next day.

Another thing, if you push the pending button, a lot of the time the story goes back to the back of the queue. So patience is it's own reward.

What I think is that this story, featuring a sixteen year old boy named Walter and a mother named Patty, was posted by John Doelman on storiesonline in 1999. The title there was "Tale of Two Mothers."

If you're John Doelman, you might be better off using that name, or at least explaining in an introductory note that you posted that story under that name, so that nobody accuses you of plagiarism (like all the comments to your story have so far).

I had no idea that someone else wrote this story, but i found it on my older brothers computer, along with approximetaly 9 other chapters. there was no author listed he is also a writer, albiet a little less perverted than I am but i was surprised to see this on his computer and thought it deserved to be posted.

I really dont appreciate being called "lowlife, and scumbag" when i didnt know, and all i was trying to do was pass on what i thought was an excellent story.

Either you have been writing on SOL since 1999 - in which case your innocence is misplaced, or you have stolen someone else's story. The general concensus is against you and I think Anna's 'scumbag' is way too mild.

Either explain or have the story removed.

No, here's the deal: It's illegal to "pass on" someone else's intellectual property. Pretending it is your own makes it even worse, but even if you did give the author credit, you'd be in the wrong.

I also don't believe you were only trying to pass on a story. You were clearly asking for feedback. You were trying to pass this off as your own until you were caught, which happened pretty quickly. If this really was on your brother's computer, why on earth would you feel it was okay to post this without his permission? Didn't you think he would have posted it himself if he wanted it out there?

I'm calling major BS, and I'm seconding the "scumbag".

Writing a PM to Laurel should work the fastest. Since this is a plagiarism issue I imagine she'll probably get to it very soon.

Honey, you weren't trying to correct an error, you were trying to cover your own ass. I'm glad you at least have the decency to remove the story.

If you want to prove me wrong, instead of insulting me I suggest addressing some of the inconsistencies I pointed out in my earlier post.

As I have said numerous times, whether your brother wrote this story of got it from elsewhere doesn't matter, and neither does it matter whether the author's name was or was not on the document. You still broke a law, genius, and I can't believe that you would be dense enough to think that taking a story that wasn't yours and posting it on the internet would be perfectly alright.

That's pretty obnoxious coming from someone who just broke a law. "You're right, and I'm sorry" would have been the way to go, instead of objecting to the way you're being treated. In Germany there's a saying: "Unwissenheit schuetzt vor Strafe nicht", which means, applied to this case, that claiming ignorance about copyright doesn't excuse what you did. If you actually felt bad about this, you'd have made it a point to apologize (instead of "implying" it, which is such bullshit).

I wasn't freaking out on you (you're the one consistently using caps, in case that escaped you), but I was calling you out on an inconsistent excuse that was either a lie you made up to save face or complete and utter stupidity. Fact is, you did not know who this story belonged to, and yet you thought it was a good idea to pass it off as yours and put it on the internet. If this is actually what happened, I don't understand why you're not more embarrassed about being that dense. This isn't even supposed to be an insult - it's a direct conclusion following from the circumstances as you have told them.

Also, the reason for my posts isn't you trying to rectify a mistake (which I hope you've done by now) but your unapologetic, lousy attitude about it.

I'm not sure whether you're trying to be pathetic or whether that's just a side effect. Someone who thinks it's perfectly fine to steal another's work and doesn't understand why that upsets people tells me I'm dense.
