I had a story that got rejected and instead of revising I just want to delete it. I went back in and pressed the delete button, but that just resubmitted it and some poor person had to read it again for naught so I don't want to do that again. What am I doing wrong?

The only thing you did wrong was the only thing you did.

If you just leave it alone after a rejection it will, in due time, disappear into the nothingness; meanwhile nobody but you can see it.

A haiku comes to mind:

With searching comes loss
And the presence of absence:
Your story not found.

you could also send a PM to Laurel and let her know that it was re-submitted in error and ask to have it removed.

I could have suggested that, but I was curious whether it might be accepted unchanged second time round, thereby confirming my theory that there are multiple editors and very subjective standards.

I couldn't supply conclusive proof of the point, but I'm 99.9% certain your theory is correct.

So you intentionally gave bad advice to someone asking for help in order to conduct an experiment?

Just based on the volume of stories, I always assumed that there were multiple site editors.

Exactly, which is probably why the results vary so dramatically. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

There was nothing wrong, or bad, about my advice. I explained how the short term problem occurred, and doing as I said would have solved the long term problem. It was merely adequate without containing a redundant alternative.
