How do Artists Feel About us Using Their Work in our Avs?

I've wondered about this before, but the whole Sateema mess brought it to the forefront of my mind.

We aren't representing their work as our own, or as us, however, most of the time they aren't getting credited either.

What do you think?

Uh, all I see on you and I is some hot mamas that need to get it on with each other.

I would love to know who did my AV I would give them full credit and I would love to see their other work! I just found it surfing porn one day and grabbed it.

one of the reasons I've mostly stuck with my own pics, or drawings by me.

Your av is in a series of lesbian porn pics. I've seen the whole series and those aren't very innocent ladies. ;)

This brings into question the nature of porn. Is it art?

I was also wondering about that Ruby ...

I think I am going to be using my dog from now on ... I know who took that picture and I am sure he is not going to mind me using his image. :)

When I get brave , maybe I will start using my own picture as an av... but I have yet to get brave.... :)

Some is, some isnt...just as if I splatterd paint on a canvass wouldnt make me Jackson Pollack...it is in the intent rather then the result..but conversley it is also the context in which it is viewed. So in other words I have no idea.

And If anyone knows where I can find the rest of these not so innocent you ladies Id be appreciative.

True, Fishie, true. But I have used somebody else's art as my av before. I felt a little conflicted about it though.

Aphrodisiac, did you get a model release from your dog?

I am open in my admiration for John Pitre's work. I sold his work for years, so I believe in giving credit where credit is due. I think it really depends on the artist. John has some spectacular nudes on his website, so I doubt he'd protest...:D

What ?!

Damn I forgot about that ?!!!

* drawing up model contract* :D

I am sure he will agree, I mean I do pay him in kibbles and bits... and that stuff if not cheap ! Only the best for my baby !! :)

i guess i'd use myself more but i dont have any other pics '-l and besides i'd get really tired of looking at my face.

I use open to the public pictures.
I'm with the general consensus, I don't think one should use copyrighted pictures for their avatars..

But I haven't seen what you are really talking about Ruby.

Did somebody here take an image someone made and used it as their own?

See the threads on and about sateema

Ruby, the conflict you feel is a reflection of the way the artistic community feels about it too. There are some who're dead-set against it, and others who get a kick out of it. But generally speaking, all artists would prefer credit to no credit.

I'm not sure why I mind some AV's and not others. I guess if it's part of a set that has made it's way around the internet, or the world, then I don't mind. Like someone is using HR Giger's, and someone else is using Hajime Sorayama's. But perhaps it's because it's lesser known, or made for one specific purpose, tigerjen's av makes me uneasy. It is the one on the title page of http://www.japanesegirls.com. Doesn't feel right.

Mine is known. I think any popular character such as Squall, or Cartman, or Britney Spears is fair game.

Now if I was an artist it would be a different matter. If I posted some of my stuff on the web, and people wanted to use it as an AV, I guess I would be okay with it, unless they used one of my favorite pics. The reasoning for me: the other pics make you want to come to my site to see my favorite pics and the others. Using one of my best (favorite) pics as an AV is like when they give the best lines away from a movie in the trailer.

I would also not use any pic that I got from a pay site that could only be reached from within the pay site, unless I felt it really described me well.

I feel my AV describes my mood and the persona of MechaBlade.

Of course porn is art. Maybe not some. But as with all bad art, porn that has little artistic value should be free to be used as an avatar.

Other than a few days of Chuck Jones, this has pretty much been it. I got this from Tanfoglio itself from an advertisement. It clearly stated that the image was free for use.

I'm sticking with it.

I Have Used Many Artisits Work As My Avatar

I Could Tell You The Name Of The Photographer Or Artist Of Each One Of Those Pictures If Asked!

Something That You Have Made For Yourself, Of Yourself Is Always The Coolest Bet Though:D

Porn Is Art. Even If It Gets Slaggy, It's Still Someone Elses Vision And Worth The, ART, Vote.

I saw the Sateema thread...

I'm not sure if what she did is any way the same as using something obviously drawn by Trey Parker as your avatar...or even on of those cool drawings of Bettie Page.

Rule Number One..
The Internet is a *very* small place.

Though maybe people should say where their art came from..
My avatar is a photo by Jerry Tibbs.

I've used Karl Bang's art as I just think it's beautiful. But my new av is a piece of art work from my husband, so I am giving him all the credit!

I just spoke with Cezanne, Matisse, and Miro. We are all for it.

I have no idea who drew this guy.

Found him on a random newsgroup titled : "9460234.jpg"

I had one artist who's picture I manipulated. I recolored it. In the end, I had spent more time redoing it than they had originally painting it. When I decided to ask the artist's permission, they responded with a scathing e-mail that went on about how I had disfigured their artwork and so on.

That artist sucks as a human being. Yay.
