Viking Burial Site Found in England

LONDON - Archaeologists in northwestern England have found a burial site of six Viking men and women, complete with swords, spears, jewelry, fire-making materials and riding equipment, officials said Monday.

The site, discovered near Cumwhitton, is believed to date to the early 10th century, and archaeologists working there called it the first Viking burial ground found in Britain.

The only other known Viking cemetery was found in Ingleby east of Cumwhitton. It was excavated in the 1940s, but the bodies had been cremated and not buried.

Local metal specialist Peter Adams made the find at the end of March and reported it to the Portable Antiquities Scheme, which is run by the Museums, Libraries and Archive Council.

"This is tremendous news, a unique discovery which will improve people's understanding of the area and its history," council chairman Mark Wood said.

The Vikings, inhabitants of Scandinavia from 800 to 1100, traded with, and raided, much of Europe, often settling there. They invaded and conquered England in 1013.

The burial ground was unearthed when Adams found two copper brooches. The grave of a Viking woman was found underneath, and further excavation led to the discovery of the graves of another woman and four men.

Among the items found in the graves were weapons, spurs, a bridle and a drinking horn, as well as a jet bracelet and a copper alloy belt fitting.

Adams described it as "the find of a lifetime."

Rachel Newman, of Oxford Archaeology North, said: "We could not have expected more from the excavation of the site.

"We knew the brooches found by Mr. Adams came from a burial of a Viking Age woman, which was exciting and of great importance in itself. But we did not expect to find five other graves complete with such a splendid array of artifacts. It truly has been an amazing few months excavating this extremely important Viking Age site."

Arts Minister Estelle Morris said: "We should all be grateful to Mr. Adams, who recorded his find so promptly. As a result, the experts have been able to learn more about this fascinating site and uncover the secrets of a time capsule more than 1,000 years old."

Some of the items found were to be shown Tuesday at the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery in the nearby city of Carlisle.

If anyone reads anything else on this, let us know. I find this so fascinating.

I think it's very cool. Can't wait till some of the pictures of the artifacts are posted :)

I saw a show on A & E, I think, a few months back that was completely about the Vikings - at one point they showed a boat that had been buried completely as a burial for, they think, a rather well-off Viking woman.....anyone remember it?

Was it the one where they moved the boat piece by piece to a museum? Fascinating stuff...

Didja watch "The Riverman" last night?

Creepy, creepy movie.

Shit I forgot it was on, are they going to repeat it?

I'm sure they will - showed it twice in a row last night. Maybe check the website to see when it's showing again?

It was more about the relationship between Ted Bundy and Keppel, and the guy that played Bundy was uncanny.

I'm with you, I have extra cable channels that give me Discovery health, kids, etc. I'm hooked on forensic shows. Once in a while something good is on TLC.
I used to be hooked on the food network, but it made me fatter.

Did you ever see the show about the body farm? and do you watch Family Plots?

Saw the one on the body farm - scary thing, I went to school at the University of Tennessee, where the body farm is located.

Watched Family Plots once or twice - kind of a twisted show, isn't it? :D

The body farm is gross but cool.

Family Plots is great, I love it. I even watched Growing up Gotti, I'd slap the shit out of those kids of hers.

Now I know we were separated at birth - we watch all the same strange shows!

Yeah, her kids are spoiled shitless, aren't they? They just beg for a backhand.

I watched one on parasites that get into your body and take over. I'm not going to borneo, africa, china or the amazon anytime soon. It was on Animal Planet, gross but like an accident, you couldn't turn away.

I'd slap those kids so hard their future children would feel it.

Bulldogs, huh? Well, I guess you can be forgiven for that since you have all these other supremely redeeming qualities. ;)

You watch the same strange shows Abs and I watch?

Sigh, you guys are so lucky. A history channel? All I get, is Discovery Channel, but my son watches that a lot. I join in every now and then.
Yes the forensics and the mummies time and again.

Abs, is that the one about the fair haired people in China?

I loved that.

No this was one about the body of an empress I believe, they called her Diva mummy.

Her body, after being washed, was wrapped tightly in over 20 layers of silk, then encased in 4 boxes, add two more buried in 5 tons of charcoal, then 4ft of clay, the topsoil was tamped down and then another mountain of dirt was placed on top of that.
They were trying to figure out, according to mortician records if a fluid was also added that helped in the preservation. Plus the fact that it was very cold underground where she lay.

I don't watch much TV at all. Nothing at all wrong with pulling for the dogs, long as you don't mind getting beat soundly every weekend

While we are talking about great shows, the history channel's Russia: land of the Tsars was top notch. I learned more about Pre revolution Russia than I though possible in such a short period.
