How can I transfer data between two remote PC's with broadband connections?

Both computers have broadband connections and routers that act as firewalls. If I want to d/l files from Computer A to Computer B using FTP software, how do I determine the IP address for Computer A, and how do I get through the firewall?

There is about 80 MB of data to transfer, so it can't be uploaded to my 10MB webspace, and it's much too large to email. I can't wait for the data to be burned to a cd.

Thanks in advance

Burn it onto CD

Wipe your ass with the CD

And put it into Computer B

I can't wait for the data to be burned to a cd.

What's the OS on the two machines and what other utilities do they have?

Thanks Hanns. Your a real stand-up guy

Shit head.

FTP uses ports 20 and 21. Set your firewall to pass those. You might need to set your router to route the ports to your computer if you have more than one on the network (probably only need to do this on the computer acting as a server).

A is WinMe, B is Win98SE. What do you mean other utilities?

There are plenty of freeware FTP programs to download.

Transfer data between computers.

Both computers have firewalls.

You have entered the realm the double blind firewall. Firewalls are designed to allow trafic out, but not to allow it in. So any communication initiated by one computer will be blocked by the other.

You could ftp the data to a thrid party computer that hosts a FTP site. The ISP I use allows up to 600meg of data to be ftp-ed to their server, but it gets deleted each night. With this scenario, you could send the data to the FTP site, and then bring it back in to your other computer via ftp as well. Note that this approach would probably leave your data open to public view while it was on the FTP site.

OR, you could bust a hole through one of the fire walls.

Step 1
Bust a hole through computer a by opening ports 20, and 21 in your firewall software to incoming traffic.

Step 2. Determine the IP address

Windows98 winipconfig
Linux ifconfig

Step 3. From computer b
ftp ipaddress

voila, you have communication.

Of course there are at least a dozen programs you could use to transfer this ammount of data, but whatever.

I do hope the data you are transferring is porn, because anything else is just not worth it.

OK, go to GRC.COM and run Sheilds Up. THere are a few other sites that will do that for you but that one I know off the top of my head.

That will give you the current IP for each machine. Then use std. ftp transfer.

(Or you could use the file transfer facility on Yahoo or AIM. :) )

They cant give you a firewall protected IP address, and Yahoo restricts the size of file transfers. Dunno about AIM. Thanks anyway.

Like Ithaqua said, determining the IP is easy. Just type winipconfig into the "run" dialogue box.

Another simple way to do it is via ICQ. Dunno how long it would take, but I do know that ICQ doesn't have file size restrictions for file transfers.

Ugh, edited cuz I'm stoopid. It should be: winipcfg

Double Blind Routers.

If you have two routers in the way, then the ip address will do you no good. Configuring the routers to send requests on port 20, and 21 to one of the computers could be a trick. I don't know if you can even DO that.

Hmmmmmm....does anyone know how to transfer files between two WinMX users? (They don't have online help)

Yahoo's file transfer system won't work through a firewall as far as I know but ICQ's might.
