Bit of a shock for us though. "What? You mean I could be selling these things? For money?"TheEarl said:Now, there's got to be a pleasant surprise. It's all free mate, dig in and gorge yourself.
Some people here do sell custom stories. Perhaps that is what the thread starter is seeking?3113 said:Bit of a shock for us though. "What? You mean I could be selling these things? For money?"![]()

Well, it's not unlike all those artists and musicians who had patrons--and for money would paint them into religious scenes or create a piece of music just for them.malachiteink said:The whole idea of a "custom story" at once intrigues me and ooks me out. What's the dealio?

Notice what a nice spin I put on it there
But folk will come around and leave requests for a story they really want to read but, not being writers, can't write themselves, or can't write well. Usually they leave said request in the "idea" section. They'll say things like, "Can anyone write me a story about me and my wife? I'm tied up and watching my wife having sex with a motorcycle gang." Or something like that.
malachiteink said:Yeah, I noticed that spin. Very good. 2 points for historical reference
That's what I was thinking it was.
Ok, it all makes sense.
I guess I can see it, but I don't really "get" ir. Even those "personalized books" you could get for a child, with their name on every page or so, always made me uncomfortable. I couldn't tell you exactly why (well, yeah, but it's a junior high trauma and I'm not GOING there).![]()
CopyCarver said:Yep--sort of reminds me of the telemarketer who said (true story, I swear):
"Good evening, insert name here. I'd like to give some some exciting news about insert product here."

Hey, that reminds me -- where you been, Carver? You get a life or something? Haven't seen you much of late.
AngeloMichael said:I think I understand what you mean. I've had friends and family come to me and ask that I write them a personalized letter or card to give to someone else and I've always had trouble with that. They always say "Well you're a writer aren't you?" but it just makes me uncomfortable writing my thoughts and feelings or my interpretation of someone else's thoughts and feelings to be passed on as another person's missive. I could never work for Hallmark![]()
CopyCarver said:Yeah, the uni got unreasonable and actually expected me to earn my paychecks for a change.
malachiteink said:Ownership. That's what I think it is. If someone commissions a story from you, they are supplying the characters, the situation, the setting, etc. You don't own it. You are providing some labor, but it's like building a story from a kit.
Hell, you couild write up a generic template, like that telemarketer of Carver's, and just pop in the names and variables. Like those 18th century traveling portrait artists did -- you already have canvases with a body and background painted in, and you just add the head and face, even if it doesn't quite fit.
CopyCarver said:The old plotto box lives! It's almost legendary in the publishing industry that pulp publishers during the Twenties and Thirties used to write bits of plot, setting, characterization, etc. on slips of paper, throw them into a cardboard carton, and then order their staff hacks to assemble a "novel" out of the bits and pieces. Some of the tabloids were using the same tactics during the a Seventies and Eighties, albeit after some market research. If the focus groups revealed that their readers wanted aliens, sex, violence, and conspiracies, they cranked out "E.T's Love Child Ate Jimmy Hoffa!!!"
