I was thinking of something along the lines of Sherlock Holmes "Deerstalker Hat" in keeping with the inspector theme. Only the front brim would be a styleized beaver teeth and the back would be the tail. Because no matter what your group would have us believe, i've never met a beaver that couldn't show its teeth on occassion.

Of course the ball hat would offer the advantage of being worn backwards allowing me to carry out my "duties"
