Black Jack Pershing got his name commanding nigger troops out west, the troops Indians called Buffalo Soldiers. Pershing had a low opinion of black soldiers as inept and stupid.
The article is mostly bull shit. The old Tampa Tribune reports that the black troops were fulla bravado and swagger and often got their asses kicked by white troops at Tampa. If I remember correctly the ass whuppins were so frequent the army moved the black troops to Georgia.
That said, many of the white troops were worse than animals. In Tampa they amused themselves shooting black children.
