Hot Wheels

BnB, a lot of the cars you linked bring me back to my ill spent youth, when I was a member of the SCCA. Back in the day I worked for Sprint communications and every year the company could sponsor a "Classic Car Grand Prix" at Mid Ohio Raceway, in Lexington, Ohio (close to Mansfield or between Cleveland and Columbus). I took my girlfriend, her father and one of her brother-in-laws and we were all like kids in the worlds most expensive candy store. We were given pit passes and were allowed to wander around all of the cars that were going to be racing. Dozens of original AC and Shelby Cobra's, Lamborghini's, Ferrari's (and Ferrari Red) for as far as you could see, Morgan's, old Triumph's, I recall seeing a Blizarini (sp), Porsche's out the wazoo and a number of Lotus's, ranging from the old Super 7 to twin turbo Elite's. What struck me most were a few late 1940's, 1950's and 1960's European sports and GT cars. God they were all so beautiful. There were a few 60's vintage muscle cars there as well. There was a flight of original Ford GT-40's, one of which I believe raced at Le Mans, a few Boss 302's and several Boss 429's, lots of classic corvettes and I would be remiss if I didn't mention 3 Daytona superbirds sitting there, in their winged glory.
I'll never forget the feeling of standing on the passenger side of a Shelby Cobra, with my back turned to it, when the owner decided to hop in and "warm it up". It was both bone jarringn and almost orgasmic at the same time. We kept wandering around and wound up in area where owners had cars up for sale. I'm honestly glad I was dirt poor then, as would have walked away with at least a dozen vehicles, if I had a couple hundred grand. But that was in the very early 1990's, cars were a little less expensive and a buck when a lot further.

Once we got finished walking we headed the paddock to watch the races. The pictures of all these cars are stunning, however, they don't do them any justice. To see them in motion, the senses are overwhelmed by the sounds and the smells of racing fuel. There were a number of Can AM car's out there as well. A couple of older Porsche's just blistered around the track, with a number of Berlinetta Boxers and a couple of Testarossa's in hot persuit. But the big Cobra's literally shook the stands as they gorilla'd their way through course.

Thank you for sharing those pictures and they brought back an absolute flood of really special memories. I miss those days. Life was so much simpler as my youth revolved around my beautiful girlfriend and obscenely fast cars.
