Shelly was in the kitchen of the little apartment, which in reality wasn’t far from the dining room which wasn’t far from the living room, and which in turn was quite easily in reach of the bathroom and bedroom. She had explored his home, and found it lacking in nothing but the absence of him and she hoped... her. She wasn’t sure if he’d want her hanging around much, but she was more then willing to.
The bread had easily been buttered and topped with garlic and a few slices of cheese that she had found in the fridge. She was impressed actually by Jacob’s dwelling, she’d seen bachelor pads before and this was nice compared to the moldy food, smelly clothes, and dirty dishes that one often saw when they showed up unannounced or sometimes even announced.
The salad was tossed and she didn’t mind the lettuce being a bit wilted or the cucumbers a tad soft. She did find herself imagining what fun it would have been to save the cucumber if it would have been harder. There were three or four cherry tomatoes that were now gracing the salad instead of the plastic container he’d stored them in. Shelly had just pulled the steaks from the skillet when the door was being knocked on. “Shit,” she muttered, smeared her hands on the makeshift apron she had concocted using a large towel from the bathroom and headed to the door.
Her fingers wrapped around the knob and she was about to pull it open when she thought a moment. “Damn... what if it’s some body that needs to talk with him? What if it some girl friend? Or his sister... or oh God his Mom?” Shelly’s fingers hovered for a moment as all these people that it could have been ran through her head. Finally squaring her shoulders she opened the door. Her eyes blinked and she looked into Jacob’s face. “Who in the world knocks on their own front door?” she asked.
