The beach was beginning to fill with visitors as they sat nest to each other. A salty sea breeze wisped about them, curling small patterns in the sand and water. As Jacob looked upon the woman that sat at his left, feeling her light fingers traveling the rocky terrain on the back of his hand, he wondered. Their had almost been a kiss, so close she had drawn he her felt her warm breath. Yet, she had pulled back. Perhaps he was rushing this; perhaps she needed more time.
He smiled, if it was time she needed, she would have it. She had lived her life for others for so long, it was time she lived it for herself. As she held his right hand in her lap, his left gently draped over her shoulders, it’s grip firm and reassuring. Slowly, tenderly, he pulled her into a soft hug. A warm hug, nothing of lust or need in it, only the urge to comfort. He leaned down, planting a kiss on the top of her head, before he spoke.
“You are the reason I stayed, Shelly. True, I came here with only one thought, to help my sister. After that was done, though, I could have left. I would have, if I had not been told someone would be arriving on a ship I once worked on.” He pulled back a bit, enough to look into her eyes, close enough to see the sparkle of the sun reflected from them. “I came here for my sister, I stayed for you.”
He held her for a few more moments, relishing her warmth. That is, until, a beach ball careened over them, bouncing in the sand in front of them. It was followed a few moments later by several small children racing past the couple towards the waters. Jacob grinned and laughed. “How about we get that bite to eat? Getting a little crowed here.” He stood, before helping Shelly to her feet.
