Matt Hopkins's night shift at the hospital where he worked as a nurse had just begun. He scanned the list of patients and noted to his satisfaction there were only three names on the list.

One was a heavily sedated old man who'd more than likely sleep until late morning. The second was at home for the night, but still on the lists in case of an emergency. The third? His heart made a little leap. She was still here. His favourite patient. A young girl in here for a long haul.

Matt had taken an instant shine to her, and they had developed a slightly flirtatious banter that neither Matt nor she were too serious about. Matt couldn't help wondering what'd happen if he'd met her outside the hospital, though. He hated to admit it, but he had begun to develop feelings for her.
But seeing as she was a patient under his care, he couldn't pursue that, so he resigned himself to be her nurse and nothing more.

The paperwork all done, he went on the first round of the night. Ol' snoozebag lived up to his name. No worries there. Then he went to her room and knocked lightly on the door, knowing that she usually stayed awake llong.

Matt Hopkins:
30 y.o.
5' 11"
170 pounds
Not ripped, but works out regularly.
Black hair, dark brown eyes.

Lilly Taylor spent most of her day staring around the room or watching the clock as doctors came in and out taking blood, running tests, checking her vitals. Being only twenty three this wasn't exactly how she had pictured her life to be. She thought by now she would be dating the man she would soon marry, have. Decent start in her career and be thinking about starting a family in a few years. instead she was stuck in a hospital with no idea what was wrong with her.

When it was time for the nightshift to start she was relieved. Finally she would get a little peace and quiet. If she was lucky he would be working. She knew he was only nice to her because she was a patient but she couldn't help hoping there was more to it. Lilly sighed closing the book she was reading when she heard the knock "come in..." She said sitting up in the bed.

Lilly Taylor
23 years old
5'8''
Red hair
Grey eyes

His pulse quickening at the sound of her voice, Matt entered the room. He couldn't contain his smile when he saw her. Up reading a book. Of course.

"Hey Lilly. Just making my rounds. Everything OK with you? I see by the paperwork filed that you've had a long and rough day."

He closed the door behind him. They tended to talk a lot when they had time for it, and he didn't want to disturb the other patient on the ward.

She couldn't help but smile when he walked in. "Yeah, but I'm alright." She said putting the book away "I'm doing a lot better now actually. "I much rather hear about your day then talk about mine. What new things are going on out there?" She asked "anything exciting?"

"Nothing really exciting, I'm afraid. No damsels in distress or anything like that."
He always started joking like that around her. It was a defence mechanism to hide his feelings for her. Then he answered her properly: "I went to the gym, had lunch with my parents and then slept for a few hours. Y'know, thrilling stuff."

He didn't mention the screaming match he'd had with his ex with whom he'd broken up over a year ago. Hasting to change the subject before she could start asking about details he cocked his head curiously and asked "What book are you reading?"

"Oh, nothing you would be interested. To be honest I'm not very interested in it." She sighed "after awhile you start running out of stuff to do, things to watch, books to read..." She fussed with her hair for a while "you know what I really miss being stuck in here?" She asked sitting on the edge of the bed.

He loved watching her play with her hair. He wondered what it would be like to run his fingers through it. Even from where he stood he could smell her, a cool slightly perfumed smell. As he gazed into her grey eyes, he almost missed her question.

"What? No, I don't know. What is it?"

"Ice cream... Vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup sounds amazing right now." She looked over at him watching him as she noticed he seemed slightly distracted "and sex.... I might miss that even more..." She took a deep breath waiting for his reaction.

That definitely got his attention! Not able to hide a blush, he started stuttering: "Um... uh... well." He kicked himself inwardly. Snap out of it, you dork! They covered this at the nurse school. She needs to talk, she's not interested in you in that way! And yet, there was an almost anticipating look in her eyes.

He tried to be professional about it: "Well Lilly, I don't think we have any ice cream or chocolate syrup, but if you need a sympathetic ear, I'm here for you. The ward takes care of itself tonight." A nervous smile followed. "It's understandable that you miss sex being cooped up in here for so long."

Damn it! The sight and smell of her, combined with what she'd just said had had an effect on his dick. Of all the nights to wear boxers...

"You don't have to be all professional around me. I deal with enough of that all day." She said slightly annoyed. "It's not like your going to get in trouble for treating me like a person. No ones around." As soon as she looked over at him she could tell that something was happening in his pants "I must not be the only one missing it..."

"I'm sorry Lilly, I- it's just very conflicting for me. I love the long talks we share and I love the way we kid with each other. In fact, I love y- to be with you, and if circumstances were different I'd be more than willing to- to have sex with you." He paused. Did he just say that?

He tried desperately to come up with an excuse to leave, but she knew him well enough to know that he'd finished his chores on the ward before coming to talk to her. He always did when he was assigned to her room. His boxers and loose hospital pants didn't do him any favors. Oh. This was bad. He could get into real trouble over this.

"Just one night..." She said getting up "I'm not going to tell anyone so who would know? Please..." She begged walking over to him "we both obviously want to. I promise it'll be just sex... No feelings attached..." She bit her lip knowing it was a little too late for that but it didn't matter how she felt about him.

No feelings attached? That was easy for her to say. Or was it? Something in the way she said that last bit felt off. He decided to tell the truth.

"The fact of the matter is that I think I'm starting to develop feelings for you, Lilly. To see you on the ward after one night of sex, knowing there could be no repeats would be torture." There he'd said it.

The way she moved towards him, the red hair and those grey eyes made his heart (and other parts of his body) yearn for her. He ached to touch her. He lifted a hand towards her hair then checked himself, the last vestiges of his professionalism making a final effort.

She smiled looking relieved when he said that. "Well then how about I admit that have feelings for you as well and then we sleep together tonight and maybe it doesn't have to end there..." She wrapped her arms around him glad to finally be close to him "I like you too..."

He didn't know what gave him the biggest buzz, her words or that she had wrapped her arms around him. To feel her warm body against his and to smell her intoxicating female scent was overpowering and he could resist it no longer. He wrapped his arms around her and gazed into her eyes before planting a light kiss on her lips. "Really?" He whispered, smiling.

His heart was racing with joy.

"Really." She said enjoying the way his arms felt around her body. It had been so long since a guy had even kissed her that she wasn't sure how to react but she couldn't believe how nice it felt. "So what do you want to do? Just pretend this didn't happen? Or keep going?"

His lips were still tingling from that first kiss. God, it had been so long..
Playfully stroking her hair (it felt nicer than he'd imagined) he answered her.
"I'd never pretend this didn't happen. And more than anything I want to keep going. But are you sure?"

He held his breath as he gave her her last chance for an out. He still held her in his arms, his heart pounding in his chest as he waited for her reply.

She suddenly tightly grabbed onto him starting to feel light headed. "I think I need to sit down..." She said her breathing starting to become difficult. Her grip on him loosened as she started to collapse.

He grabbed her before she hit the floor. Then he lifted her up in his arms. She was so light. He felt a pang of conscience as he carried her towards the bed. This clearly had been too much for her. He lay her down on the bed and started checking her vital signs, all professional again. Shallow breaths, middle BP and a quickening pulse. She should be fine but he would need to observe her further.

It took a while but eventually her breathing started to return to normal. It took even longer before she said anything to him "I'm going to die in here aren't I?" She asked quietly "I'm never going to get a chance to get out of here.... I'm sorry I don't know what happened..."

He watched her stir back to consciousness, heaving a sigh of relief. Now that he had laid bare his feelings for her and had them reciprocated, the thought of her dying was doubly painful. "You fainted, is what happened, Lilly." He almost couldn't bear to look her in the eyes. He was so overcome with both relief and fear for her that he was having a hard time not to choke up. He didn't want her to see him like that, she had enough with her own troubles.

"And Lilly, we're not really sure what ails you. If we'd written you off as a lost cause we would have sent you to another ward. This ward is for the ones who still have hope. Please don't give in! Not now when..."

His voice trailed off, thick with emotion. He grabbed her hand and kissed it, then held it close to him, bowing his head.

"It's been months... I'm out of insurance and I can't work. I'm out of money and I'm going to run out of time soon. They wound keep trying to treat me when I can't pay them." She sighed turning away from him "I'm pretty sure they are already planning on sending me home... Then what am I supposed to do?"

"If you can't work, where are you supposed to live?" He couldn't believe he was saying this so soon but "Why don't you- why don't you move in with me?" He checked himself. This was madness. But she couldn't pay rent without working and she couldn't work without getting better. And she needed someone to look after her. Logically it made all sorts of sense to him, but still...

He almost regretted making the offer, putting her on the spot like that. Yet there it was.

"I couldn't do that to you..." She said carefully sitting up "it doesn't feel right to make you take care of me just because I can't. Just because I can't have a life doesn't mean that you shouldn't either." She looked over at him "I'll figure something out I'm sure..."

He lifted his head, eyes still red after his little outburst and gave her a warm smile.

"You've got it all wrong Lilly. You make caring for you sound like a chore when the fact of the matter is that I always look forward to being with you when you're assigned to me as my patient. Besides, now that I know what we feel for each other, I couldn't sleep at night knowing you'd be out there fending for yourself without someone to look after you. I care too much about you to not worry about you Lilly."

As declarations of love went, this wasn't Shakespeare. But it was sincere.
He took her hand again and stroked it gently.
