Horror

I like the kind of stuff that messes with your head, like the first Halloween movie.

Halloween strikes me as being scary only when it was first released and the thrill of it eventually fading over time. Or maybe I'm just talking out of my ass because I wasn't even born yet when it came out, and for that reason it seems dated and even funny. I pop in the DVD from time to time when I need a good laugh.

*ducks, runs for cover* ;)

I thought that Angel Heart was pretty damned good. Robert DeNiro kicked ass in it, even though he had only a few scenes.

Personally, I thought that movie more or less sucked, save for Lisa Bonet's nude scenes. Of course, I haven't seen it in a long time.

He is a master. I love seeing how the protagonist breaks down over the course of the Tell-Tale Heart.

The Tell-tale Heart was good, but the problem always was that it was told first person by a character who was totally insane. You wonder at times if it took place at all, even in the character's reality, by the time you finish reading it.

I don't think gore has anything to do with whether or not something counts as horror. Mostly, in my definition, it's whether or not the piece is intended to play on the fears of the reader/viewer/listener. Not necessarily whether or not it succeeds, but what the intent is. I found Scream to be more suspenseful than frightening, but it was intended to scare, making it horror by my definition.

Lovecraft... Honestly, I can't read his work, for the same reason I couldn't read Jeckyl and Hyde. The writing just wasn't my cup of tea. It wasn't a style that I found fluent, and I couldn't drag myself through it.

What qualifies as Erotic Horror?

A guy being chased by a crazed chick with garden shears who is trying to cut off his cock to use it as a dildo. She hates men, but loves their cocks.

No...I think that would qualify as comedy...

The Poe piece you are referring to is The Cask of Amontillado - one of my personal favorites, actually.

Funny but true - there was a HUGE stink about The Tell-Tale Heart raised around here a couple of years ago, almost resulting in Poe being banned from the schools. It seems one of the teachers sent home that one as required reading for class. One student was disturbed by it and showed it to her parents, who showed it to others, and it ballooned from there. It seems they couldn't wrap their minds around the fact that it was a story about guilt driving a person insane, so they decided it was glorifying murder, so was against the teachings of the church, and everything having to do with it and the person that wrote it should be banned.

Ah, Bible thumpers. When will they ever learn?

Yeeeeaaaaahhh...

Uneducated bible thumpers at that. Just glad the notion of a ban eventually got laughed out of existance.

It could eat me, just not cut me off....THE HORROR!

The Hollywood remake of "The Ring" freaked me the fuck out, especially that horrible face near the beginning. To this day I can't see that face without screaming and jumping at every shadow.
