I'd like to read some horror that is more than just gross. That's not horror, its just nasty.

Like "Hannibal"? The movie version disgusted me big time.

What's classified as 'horror' these days isn't real horror, imo. Horror has more to do with fucking with people's minds than blood and guts. People tend to forget that.

I agree...it pretty much has to be supernatural or animal

It doesn't necessarily have to be that for me, but it DOES have to be actually scary. Stalkers are scary when done correctly. So are a couple of other things. The Silence of the Lambs (movie) scared the piss out of me the first time i saw it.

I call it 'gorror'. It's just not the same as a good thriller.

Jeepers Creepers kind of scared me in parts...

Evil Dead one... creepy... that cackling laugh... *shiver*

Blair Witch was creepy to me, the first time I saw it... enjoyed it...

I like suspense... and creepy images always get me... I don't necessarily like the movie plots entirely of the Japanese flicks, but the images *shudder* Like in "The Ring." creepy. Some Stephen King has images like that... in Pet Sematary, the sister dying in her bed... creeeeeeeeeeeepy...

edited to add: oh, you guys are talking about books  I'm a huge King fan... but Clive Barker rocks, too... at least, his earlier stuff...

my husband adores H.P. Lovecraft... and anything with tentacles... *shrug*

Oh god my favorite subject. Well other than erotica . . . smiles. Horror is the Hellraiser Series IMHO. Horror is The Shining. Carrie was scary for its time. Does anyone remember the old classic Attack of the Killer Tomatoes . . . so funny that one was. Oh god The Exorcist. That movie to this day I cannot watch. I get really freaked out by things that can possibly happen. Ok now I'll have to sleep with the lights on tonight. Yesss, I do get that freaked out by that movie!!!

I definitely know what you mean. Modern horror producers have seem to forgot that horror is about creepy not gore. Rosemary's Baby created one of cinema's creepiest, scariest moments with a whole bunch of people looking at a crib.

Also a problem because I like my horror to have some smart in it as well. What I would reccomend is psych horror. If you're going cinema, Jacob's Ladder is the key masterpiece (creepy, smart, and well-written). If you're going video games, the Silent Hill series is exceedingly well-written and combines insanely creepy music and atmosphere with disturbing images, a genuine sense of panic, and an incredibly written surrealistic storyline. It has more creepy moments packed into each game than the entire horror movie genre put together. For computer, anyone who can find the old game Shivers will find its brilliantly composed score will actually make you jump a good 2 feet out of your chair over a 2D pixel that looks like a shadow puppet. It's all about the music.

For books, I've had a harder time going. I've read some disturbing, but genuine scary has been hard to find (mainly because I haven't the inclination yet to really dive into the section and try to separate the psych horror from the over-abundant vampire-werewolf slash-fic). Early Stephen King's pretty good though it tends towards gross in places. "It" is always a classic. Fucking clowns man. Beyond that...don't know. Anyone know any good Jacob's Ladder-esque pscyh horror out there?

The one where the girl got raped by the tree. I still get a hard-on over that one...it was horror, just didn't scare me.

May Cthulhu devour me for a thousand eons. How could I have forgot?

Lovecraft and Poe. Gods of horror. They do creepy. They do creepy good.

I'm with you, disturbing, but nothing that would get my heart rate up.

Poe is disturbing, last one I read was the one where he lures the guy down in the catacones and cements him into the wall alive.

Ok, that IS creepy!

The cool thing about it was that I didn't see it coming. Poe did not give the intent of the protag away....really cool.

He is a master. I love seeing how the protagonist breaks down over the course of the Tell-Tale Heart. And who can resist The Raven for creepy poetry.

Hmm, now I'm going to have to crack open the Poe collection this weekend. Got a craving.

I have a Poe paperback...and I started to read one of the stories to my son...who is 9.

Well, the story was about a cat..and how the man goes about killing the cat...

In the middle of the story, my son was like, "Mom...I don't think I really want to hear this."

Horror to me...Kill Bill....I thought it was just way too bloody...

There was a movie I saw once when I was younger, where people were buried in the walls...THAT WAS HORROR!!!

I thought that Angel Heart was pretty damned good. Robert DeNiro kicked ass in it, even though he had only a few scenes.

That was one of the few stories I've read where I was cheering for the bad guy.

That's the one where I was cheering for the bad guy to get caught. ;)
