I'd like to read some horror that is more than just gross. That's not horror, its just nasty.

It doesn't necessarily have to be that for me, but it DOES have to be actually scary. Stalkers are scary when done correctly. So are a couple of other things. The Silence of the Lambs (movie) scared the piss out of me the first time i saw it.BlackSnake said:I agree...it pretty much has to be supernatural or animal

Lucifer_Carroll said:I definitely know what you mean. Modern horror producers have seem to forgot that horror is about creepy not gore. Rosemary's Baby created one of cinema's creepiest, scariest moments with a whole bunch of people looking at a crib.
Also a problem because I like my horror to have some smart in it as well. What I would reccomend is psych horror. If you're going cinema, Jacob's Ladder is the key masterpiece (creepy, smart, and well-written). If you're going video games, the Silent Hill series is exceedingly well-written and combines insanely creepy music and atmosphere with disturbing images, a genuine sense of panic, and an incredibly written surrealistic storyline. It has more creepy moments packed into each game than the entire horror movie genre put together. For computer, anyone who can find the old game Shivers will find its brilliantly composed score will actually make you jump a good 2 feet out of your chair over a 2D pixel that looks like a shadow puppet. It's all about the music.
For books, I've had a harder time going. I've read some disturbing, but genuine scary has been hard to find (mainly because I haven't the inclination yet to really dive into the section and try to separate the psych horror from the over-abundant vampire-werewolf slash-fic). Early Stephen King's pretty good though it tends towards gross in places. "It" is always a classic. Fucking clowns man. Beyond that...don't know. Anyone know any good Jacob's Ladder-esque pscyh horror out there?

Lovecraft and Poe. Gods of horror. They do creepy. They do creepy good.
BlackSnake said:Poe is disturbing, last one I read was the one where he lures the guy down in the catacones and cements him into the wall alive.
Angel Love said:Ok, that IS creepy!
BlackSnake said:The cool thing about it was that I didn't see it coming. Poe did not give the intent of the protag away....really cool.

Honey123 said:I have a Poe paperback...and I started to read one of the stories to my son...who is 9.
Well, the story was about a cat..and how the man goes about killing the cat...
In the middle of the story, my son was like, "Mom...I don't think I really want to hear this."
Aurora Black said:I thought that Angel Heart was pretty damned good. Robert DeNiro kicked ass in it, even though he had only a few scenes.
