Your thread title sounds fairly standard. Many unfortunates ARE attracted to lunatics.
For your story, we must distinguish between various mental illnesses. One would have rather different sexual experiences with extreme neurotics, catatonics, schizophrenics, psycho- or socio-paths, delusional paranoiacs, righteousness fetishists, and similar political-religious conservatives.
Our main character is obviously quite mad also. Of course, there is no bright line of mental illness. Is sanity marked by a 'normal' bell curve? How do we decide at any time and place just what is sane and what isn't? Is insanity normal? It's certainly common. Are we all mentally ill in one way or another?
But I digress. My story Like A Hole In The Head features a brain-damage fetish. The narrator is obviously more nutz than her impaired targets. Are all fetishists nutz? [/me ducks to avoid thrown objects]

Many fetishes are or were caught in the DSM, depending upon the version (and the seriousness of the fetish).
I was thinking the first women in poor P's life would not be diagnosed crazies, or might have manageable mental illness- bipolar; borderline personality disorder; narcissistic personality disorder- one of those where lots of folks are walking around functioning, but leaving havoc in their wake. That would condition P to be an enabler... but what happens when surrounded by real crazies???

Should I be serious here? I've fucked folks with, umm, different standards of reality, shall we say. The experiences were not really exciting nor fun. True insanity is not fun. Stories hinting otherwise are fantasies. That's OK, this is LIT fantasyland, resplendent with improbabilities.
